India Enhances Groundwater Quality Monitoring Efforts
The Central Government, in collaboration with State Governments, is intensifying efforts to ensure safe drinking water for rural households across India. Regular groundwater testing and analysis are conducted by the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) and state authorities. They examine various quality parameters, including Electrical Conductivity (EC), fluoride, nitrate, and heavy metals to address contamination issues.
As part of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), which aims to provide safe drinking water to every rural household, the Bureau of Indian Standards’ (BIS) benchmarks have been adopted to ensure water quality. According to reports from States and Union Territories, as of February 2026, there are 2,870 water quality testing laboratories operational across the nation, focusing on groundwater sources as well.
Collaborative Online Monitoring
To enhance the management of water quality, an online portal called the JJM – Water Quality Management Information System (JJM-WQMIS) has been established. This portal facilitates efficient monitoring and reporting of sample collection, testing, and surveillance for drinking water quality.
Empowering Communities
In a significant move to empower local communities, states and Union Territories have been encouraged to train five individuals, preferably women, from each village to conduct on-site water quality testing using Field Testing Kits (FTKs). So far, around 2.48 million women have undergone training, with approximately 800,000 actively updating data on the WQMIS portal.
Strategies and Government Support
While ‘water’ remains primarily a state subject, the Central Government has initiated several strategies to assist state efforts in mitigating groundwater contamination and ensuring safe drinking water. Key measures include:
- The dissemination of groundwater quality data generated by CGWB through annual reports, bi-annual bulletins, and alerts for timely actions.
- Special attention to groundwater quality in areas undergoing mapping studies under the National Aquifer Mapping & Management Programme (NAQUIM), including proposing management plans to address contamination.
- Development of techniques for constructing arsenic and fluoride safe wells, alongside providing technical support for statewide initiatives.
- Prioritizing quality-affected habitations for implementation under JJM.
- Encouraging artificial recharge of aquifers as a means to improve groundwater quality, complemented by various campaigns and schemes like Jal Shakti Abhiyan, Atal Bhujal Yojana, and MGNREGS.
- Efforts to manage surface water pollution, which contributes to groundwater contamination through the installation of sewage and effluent treatment systems.
These initiatives, particularly those supported by the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) and the National River Conservation Plan (NRCP), aim to significantly improve water quality within the country’s rivers.
