Urgent WTO Reform Needed as Global Trade Reaches Critical Juncture, Says Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
The World Trade Organization (WTO) is at a critical juncture, according to its Director-General, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. The WTO Director-General cautioned that a breakdown of the multilateral trading framework could lead to widespread uncertainty for businesses and global commerce. She painted a stark picture of the potential chaos that could ensue if the current system collapses. “If we don’t have this system, what does it mean? I’ll be very honest with you: there’ll be chaos,” she warned. Okonjo-Iweala elaborated on the implications for businesses, explaining that without a reliable trading framework, companies would face unpredictable customs valuations and tariffs, making it difficult to assess profitability. She stressed that businesses could encounter unforeseen rules upon the arrival of their goods, further complicating international trade.
