India’s National Cooperation Policy Achieves Major Milestones
The Government of India has set impressive goals under the National Cooperation Policy, 2025, aiming to strengthen cooperatives across various sectors. This ambitious initiative includes creating a supportive legal environment, ensuring accessibility to finance, and enhancing technology adoption to boost efficiency and transparency in cooperative management.
Key objectives of the policy focus on establishing autonomy and promoting good governance. The government seeks to provide equal business opportunities to cooperatives, encouraging them to tap into international markets and enhance their members’ incomes. In addition, the policy promotes sustainable practices, emphasizing the importance of environmental responsibility within the cooperative framework.
Major Achievements Under the Policy
Among the significant accomplishments, the establishment of the National Urban Cooperative Finance and Development Corporation Limited (NUCFDC) stands out as a pivotal step towards shaping the urban cooperative banking landscape. This organization has also earned recognition as a self-regulatory organization by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
Furthermore, Sahakar Sarathi Limited was introduced to facilitate digital banking infrastructure for Rural Cooperative Banks, enhancing their operational capabilities. Education plays a cornerstone role; the launch of “Tribhuvan” Sahkari University aims to deliver top-notch, standardized education for cooperative professionals, ensuring they are well-equipped to meet market demands.
In a bid to elevate exports, the National Cooperative Export Limited (NCEL) has been set up to promote cooperative sector products in global markets, while the Bharatiya Beej Sahakari Samiti Limited concentrates on the seed production and certification process.
Digital Transformation in Agriculture
The government accentuates its commitment to digitizing the cooperative system with its Computerization of Primary Agriculture Credit Societies (PACS) initiative. Originally covering 63,000 PACS, the scope has expanded to include 79,630 societies, now harnessing Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software for enhanced service delivery.
This digitization strategy aims to streamline operations, improve transparency, and offer various services—ranging from credit to marketing—under one roof. Such integration fosters better financial inclusion, empowering farmers and enabling data-informed decision-making.
Innovative Mobility Solution
The “Bharat Taxi” ride-hailing service represents a cutting-edge intervention in India’s mobility sector. As a cooperative-led platform, it supports driver ownership and governance while providing a commission-free model that allows profits to go directly to drivers. Launched on June 6, 2025, Bharat Taxi currently operates in areas like Delhi and Gujarat, boasting a registered customer base of nearly one million and over 300,000 drivers.
