India and Vietnam Strengthen Silk and Textile Ties
The Central Silk Board (CSB), under the Ministry of Textiles, recently completed a five-day official visit to Vietnam, aimed at bolstering bilateral cooperation in sericulture, silk, textiles, and technical textiles. The visit, supported by the Embassy of India in Hanoi, aligns with the Government of India’s strategy to enhance international collaboration, fortify value chains, and promote sustainable growth in the textile sector.
Key Meetings and Partnerships
During the visit, Dr. Naresh Babu N., Joint Secretary (Tech.) at the Central Silk Board, had the honor of presenting the prestigious Five-in-One Silk Stole to the Chairman of Bitexco Nam Long Joint Stock Company, a prominent player in Vietnam’s textile manufacturing and export sector. Dr. Babu extended an invitation to the company for participation in the upcoming Bharat Tex 2026 event. Additionally, he engaged with the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS) and discussed strategies to promote handlooms and handicrafts, product development, and the importance of policy support. VITAS expressed a strong interest in future collaborations.
Exploring Cultural Heritage and Modern Technology
The delegation’s program included a significant meeting with Shri Tshering Wangchuk Sherpa, the Indian Ambassador to Vietnam, where discussions centered on strengthening bilateral ties in the silk and textile industries. A visit to the historic Van Phuc Silk Craft Village in Hanoi provided the team with insights into the village’s integrated model that combines weaving, embroidery, design, fashion, and market access. This exploration could serve as a blueprint for developing a sericulture-tourism model in India.
Showcasing Indian Silk
While in Vietnam, the delegation toured modern facilities, including state-of-the-art automatic reeling units and mulberry farms. They participated in key international exhibitions such as the Vietnam International Value Chain Exhibition 2026 (VIVC 2026) and the Vietnam Glorious Spring Fair 2026 (VGSF 2026) at the Vietnam Exhibition Center. The Central Silk Board’s stall, featuring an array of Indian silk products, captured significant attention, underscoring the expanding global market for Indian silk.
Strengthening Future Collaborations
Furthermore, the team visited traditional silk outlets in Ho Chi Minh City to explore a variety of silk fabrics and heritage fashion products. They interacted with local artisans to learn about stitching techniques and innovative designs, discovering numerous opportunities for diversifying silk products. This visit has paved the way for enhanced joint research and development, technology transfer, and vital business-to-business partnerships between India and Vietnam in the textile and handicrafts sectors.
