New Train Service and Facilities Launched in Northeast India

In a significant step towards enhancing rail connectivity and boosting the development of the Northeast, Union Minister for Railways and Information Technology, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, inaugurated new blended hospitality services at Guwahati Railway Station, Assam, via video conferencing. Alongside this, he flagged off a new passenger train service between Sairang and Silchar, promising to improve regional integration. The ceremony saw the presence of notable figures, including Mizoram’s Chief Minister Shri Lalduhoma and several members of Parliament.
The newly launched Sairang-Silchar passenger train establishes a direct link between Mizoram’s capital and Assam’s Barak Valley. This initiative is set to facilitate safe and rapid travel for students, daily commuters, and patients, effectively enhancing the quality of life for residents in both regions.
Modern Amenities at Guwahati Railway Station
During the inaugural event, Vaishnaw unveiled modern hospitality features at Guwahati Railway Station, including innovative sleeping pods, a state-of-the-art air-conditioned lounge, and multi-cuisine dining options. These enhancements aim to elevate passenger comfort and ensure hygienic, customer-friendly experiences during travel. The upgraded facilities provide tranquility and convenience, making the station more user-friendly for travelers.
Government’s Commitment to the Northeast
In his address, Shri Vaishnaw emphasized the government’s commitment to the Northeast, revealing a substantial increase in railway funding. A record budget allocation of ₹11,486 crore for the fiscal year 2026–27 showcases the government’s focus on this region. Vaishnaw also noted that projects valued at about ₹72,468 crore are currently progressing, underscoring a determined push towards enhancing connectivity and infrastructure.
The Minister articulated that developments in the Northeast align with Prime Minister’s vision for a prosperous “Viksit Bharat.” Improved rail connectivity not only facilitates passenger movement but also stimulates economic activities by easing the transportation of goods, tapping into unexplored markets for local products.
Historic Railway Linkages
Vaishnaw highlighted the historical Bairabi–Sairang railway line project as a significant achievement under this initiative. This line connects Mizoram’s capital to the broader Indian Railways network, enhancing accessibility and transport options. Inaugurating additional train services will further fortify links between Mizoram and Assam, as well as other northeastern states.
CM Lalduhoma expressed his appreciation to the Railway Minister, shedding light on the various railway projects connecting Mizoram and Assam that promise to benefit the region significantly. The past decade has witnessed a rapid transformation of the Northeast’s railway landscape, with long-overdue projects stepping into reality and state capitals increasingly integrated into the national railway network.
With the commissioning of the 51 km Bairabi–Sairang broad-gauge line, which placed Aizawl on India’s railway map for the first time last year, the launch of the new passenger services to Silchar represents a further advancement in connectivity. This not only enhances mobility but also drives economic growth across the region.
