India Advances AI Sovereignty with BHASHINI’s Cloud Transformation
Yotta Data Services, the leading provider of sovereign cloud infrastructure in India, has successfully deployed the BHASHINI project on its Government Community Cloud (GCC) and Shakti Cloud. This significant milestone aligns with the objectives of the IndiaAI Mission and marks a pivotal advancement in India’s pursuit of self-reliant and scalable artificial intelligence capabilities. The BHASHINI platform now operates fully on Indian cloud and GPU infrastructure, which ensures that all language datasets, models, and interactions with citizens remain securely within India’s jurisdiction.
A Showcase of Innovation
This groundbreaking development was highlighted during ‘The India AI Sovereignty Dialogues,’ a key pre-summit event at the AI Impact Summit 2026, organized by Yotta and the Digital India BHASHINI Division. The event also unveiled the ‘Sovereign AI Cloud Transformation Report,’ which details a real-world deployment of BHASHINI services at the Maha Kumbh 2025—recognized as the world’s largest religious gathering. BHASHINI’s multilingual AI services were effectively tested here, providing real-time translation and voice assistance in over 11 Indian languages, including through the innovative multilingual assistant, ‘Kumbh Sah’AI’yak’.
Performance Enhancements Through Indigenous Technology
This deployment illustrates how national digital public goods can transition from hyperscale environments to indigenous cloud infrastructures. It achieves up to a 40 percent performance increase, along with 20 to 30 percent cost savings, while maintaining an impressive uptime of 99.99 percent. Throughout the migration, more than 200 TiB of data and over 3.5 billion files were handled with zero data loss.
Official Remarks on the Migration
Shri Abhishek Singh, IAS, who serves as the Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “The migration of Bhashini to indigenous platforms demonstrates that India is capable of building and securing its sovereign AI systems for the public good.” This further solidifies the IndiaAI Mission’s vision of creating AI applications tailored to India’s specific needs.
Amitabh Nag, CEO of Digital India BHASHINI Division, added, “Transitioning to Yotta’s sovereign AI cloud boosts BHASHINI’s control and scalability, thus enhancing our ability to provide inclusive multilingual services.” Likewise, Ms. Kavita Bhatia, COO of IndiaAI Mission, highlighted that this deployment exemplifies the secure scaling of national digital public goods on local platforms without sacrificing performance.
Sovereignty through Modular Infrastructure
Sunil Gupta, Co-Founder and CEO of Yotta Data Services, stated, “This successful deployment is a milestone in India’s quest for data sovereignty. It emphasizes that crucial AI platforms can operate entirely on sovereign infrastructure.” The migration, executed over a two to three-month period, encompassed BHASHINI’s complete AI stack, incorporating multilingual datasets, models, and other essential components designed for long-term vendor neutrality.
The new cloud architecture serves as a modular framework that can be replicated across governmental ministries and large-scale national projects. It strengthens India’s mission to establish AI as a secure and inclusive public utility that fosters economic growth and digital inclusion.
BHASHINI stands as a sophisticated AI-powered language translation platform, bridging gaps in literacy and language. Its mission revolves around making communication accessible through innovative voice-based multilingual AI solutions.
The IndiaAI Mission, under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), aspires to bolster India’s AI ecosystem by fostering innovation, promoting responsible adoption, and driving economic growth through transformative AI solutions.
