India and US Establish Framework for Interim Trade Agreement: Key Aspects of the Deal

India and the United States have announced a significant step towards enhancing their trade relationship with a new framework for an interim agreement. This agreement, revealed in a joint statement from the White House, aims to foster reciprocal and mutually beneficial trade between the two nations. It builds on the commitment made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former President Donald Trump to negotiate a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), which commenced in February 2025. The framework comes in the wake of recent trade tensions, with the U.S. agreeing to consider India’s request for reduced tariffs on its goods.

Details of the Interim Agreement

The interim agreement outlines several key provisions aimed at improving trade dynamics between India and the United States. Under this framework, India has committed to eliminating or significantly reducing tariffs on a wide range of U.S. industrial goods and various food and agricultural products. This includes items such as dried distillers’ grains, red sorghum, tree nuts, fresh and processed fruits, soybean oil, and alcoholic beverages. In return, the United States will impose a reciprocal tariff rate of 18% on certain Indian-origin goods, including textiles, leather, plastics, and machinery. The agreement also stipulates that the U.S. will lift tariffs on specific aircraft and parts previously imposed for national security reasons.

Addressing Non-Tariff Barriers

A significant focus of the interim agreement is the resolution of non-tariff barriers that have historically hindered trade. India has pledged to address longstanding issues affecting U.S. medical devices and to streamline import licensing procedures for information and communication technology goods. Additionally, India will review its acceptance of U.S. and international standards for exports in identified sectors within six months. The agreement also emphasizes the need to tackle barriers affecting U.S. food and agricultural exports, aiming to create a more favorable trading environment.

Future Trade Prospects and Economic Cooperation

Looking ahead, both countries have expressed their commitment to expanding market access through ongoing negotiations under the BTA. The U.S. has indicated it will consider further reductions in tariffs on Indian goods as discussions progress. Furthermore, India has signaled its intention to purchase goods worth $500 billion from the U.S. over the next five years, including energy products, aircraft, and technology items. The two nations also plan to enhance cooperation in critical technologies and digital trade, aiming to establish robust and mutually beneficial trade rules.

Implementation and Next Steps

The White House has stated that both countries will act swiftly to implement the agreed framework and work towards finalizing the interim agreement. The ultimate goal is to conclude a comprehensive and mutually beneficial Bilateral Trade Agreement in alignment with the established roadmap. This collaborative effort underscores the importance of strengthening economic ties and enhancing supply chain resilience between India and the United States, paving the way for a more integrated and prosperous trade relationship.
