Election Commission Gears Up for Upcoming Assembly Elections
Meetings for Central Observers conducted by the Election Commission of India (ECI) have wrapped up at the Indian Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM). These sessions, held over two days on February 5 and 6, 2026, prepared 1,444 officers, comprising 714 General Observers, 233 Police Observers, and 497 Expenditure Observers, for the imminent General Elections in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal.
The briefing covered crucial topics such as the preparation of electoral rolls, the conduct of elections, and regulations surrounding expenditure. Additionally, the attendees received a demonstration of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), enhancing their understanding of the technological tools at their disposal.
Leadership Addresses Observers
On the final day, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Shri Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi, led the session for the last group of Central Observers. This included a vital doubt-clearing interaction aimed at ensuring all observers were fully equipped for their roles.
In his speech, CEC Gyanesh Kumar reaffirmed the commitment of the ECI to conducting elections in strict adherence to legal guidelines. He urged observers to follow these directives meticulously and emphasized the importance of ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections.
Responsibilities Highlighted for Central Observers
Election Commissioner Dr. S.S. Sandhu reminded the observers of the significant responsibility they bear as representatives of the ECI in the field. He stressed the importance of maintaining high standards of conduct to ensure every electoral participant has a fair opportunity.
Dr. Vivek Joshi also addressed the observers, urging them to promptly attend to any grievances or complaints they might encounter. Addressing these issues effectively, he noted, fosters trust in the electoral process among citizens and political parties alike. He highlighted successful initiatives recently implemented by the Commission during the Bihar Assembly Elections as a model for continued improvement.
The ECI appoints Central Observers under the constitutional powers defined in Article 324 and Section 20B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. Their role is vital in ensuring the electoral process is conducted fairly and efficiently at the ground level.
