Government Eases Wheat Stock Limits Ahead of Festive Season

In a proactive measure to ensure ample supply and stabilize prices of wheat before the upcoming festive season, the Central Government has announced the withdrawal of the wheat stock limit order issued on May 27, 2025. This decision, prompted by ongoing monitoring of wheat prices and availability, applies to all States and Union Territories across the nation.

Despite the easing of restrictions, wheat stocking entities must continue to declare their stock positions weekly, every Friday, on the designated food stock portal. This consistent reporting allows for better tracking of the wheat supply chain and ensures transparency in the market.

Recent data from private entities indicates a considerable increase in wheat stocks this year. As of 2025-26, the reported wheat availability stands at approximately 81 LMT, which is an impressive 30 LMT higher than the previous year’s figures. This surplus reflects a healthy supply level within the country, easing concerns about potential shortages.

Additionally, the Department of Consumer Affairs has noted a downward trend in wheat prices. Wholesale prices have dipped from Rs. 2970.10 per quintal last year to around Rs. 2852.30 per quintal currently. This reduction in prices is attributed to weaker demand and an overall excess supply situation in domestic markets.

The area under wheat cultivation has also seen a rise, with farming acreage expanding to about 334.17 lakh hectares, up from 328.04 lakh hectares last year. This growth underscores farmers’ ongoing preference for wheat cultivation, driven by assured minimum support prices (MSP) and favorable procurement opportunities. The increased acreage bodes well for a strong forthcoming harvest.

As a result of these favorable conditions, sufficient wheat supplies are anticipated to meet the requirements of the Public Distribution System (PDS) and various welfare schemes, while also allowing for potential market interventions if necessary. The Department of Food and Public Distribution is closely monitoring both the prices and stock levels of wheat to ensure that the necessary availability is maintained nationwide.
