Boosting Connectivity: Government Expands Broadband and Mobile Access
The Indian government is taking significant strides to enhance digital connectivity across rural and remote areas. In a recent update, Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, revealed the government’s efforts to strengthen high-speed broadband and mobile services in border and aspirational districts. By December 2025, extensive projects aim to connect over 214,904 Gram Panchayats (GPs) with broadband under the BharatNet initiative, alongside the commissioning of 23,694 mobile towers through the 4G Saturation Project and other mobile ventures.

The government is committed to making telecom services accessible and affordable across various regions. Initiatives include proactive policies and the implementation of the Telecommunications Act 2023, which aims to simplify regulations in the sector. Additionally, the establishment of the Digital Bharat Nidhi, previously known as the Universal Service Obligation Fund, provides crucial financial support for initiating, operating, and sustaining telecom networks in areas that are economically unviable.
