India’s Heritage Under Threat: Preservation Efforts Intensify
India is home to 3,686 protected monuments and areas, diligently managed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). However, concerns have risen regarding encroachments and illegal construction activities surrounding some of these treasured sites. The government addresses these violations through the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act of 1958, ensuring the protection of the nation’s cultural heritage.
HRIDAY Scheme: Reviving Heritage Cities
In response to the need for preserving and enhancing the essence of heritage cities, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs launched the National Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY) in January 2015. This initiative aims to revitalize these cities, reflecting their unique character while promoting an attractive and secure environment.
The HRIDAY scheme focuses on strategic development across twelve heritage cities, including Ajmer (Rajasthan), Amaravati (Andhra Pradesh), Amritsar (Punjab), Badami (Karnataka), Dwarka (Gujarat), Gaya (Bihar), Kancheepuram and Velankanni (Tamil Nadu), Mathura and Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), Puri (Odisha), and Warangal (Telangana). The program emphasized improving quality of life through enhanced sanitation, security, tourism, and livelihoods, all while maintaining the cultural identity of these cities. The mission concluded on March 31, 2019, having made significant contributions to the heritage sector.
Conservation Efforts by ASI
The ASI continues to play a crucial role in the conservation and restoration of protected monuments and areas. These efforts are carried out based on specific needs, available funding, and alignment with the national conservation policy, which advocates for the continuous preservation of India’s rich heritage.
This comprehensive update on India’s cultural heritage was shared by Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, in a written response during a recent session in the Rajya Sabha. As the nation confronts numerous challenges in heritage conservation, the government remains committed to protecting and preserving its historic legacy for future generations.
