India Strengthens Ties with Guatemala in Social Development
During the ongoing Commission for Social Development in New York, India’s Union Minister of State, Smt. Savitri Thakur, met with Her Excellency Claudia Teresa Valenzuela Lopez, the Vice-Minister of Social Development from Guatemala. This pivotal meeting reaffirmed India’s dedication to enhancing its warm and mutually beneficial relationship with Guatemala.
In their discussions, Minister Thakur emphasized India’s holistic approach toward women-led and inclusive development. She showcased key initiatives the country has undertaken in areas such as social protection, education, health, nutrition, skill development, digital empowerment, and economic participation of women. Thakur shared insights into India’s successful flagship programs, including Self-Help Groups, Direct Benefit Transfer, PM POSHAN school meals, and advancements in digital public infrastructure. She expressed India’s eagerness to share its best practices, particularly noting Guatemala’s exciting inclusion in the ShakthiSAT global STEM initiative aimed at empowering girls.

Both leaders reinforced their shared objectives in promoting gender equality, eradicating poverty, and fostering inclusive growth. They acknowledged the importance of multilateral cooperation at the United Nations as they explored avenues for enhanced collaboration in social development, women’s empowerment, and welfare initiatives for indigenous communities.
Engaging with the Indian Diaspora
Additionally, Minister Thakur took the opportunity to connect with members of the Indian diaspora. During this interaction, she highlighted the Pankhudi Portal, which aims to engage the community in India’s development journey. She encouraged the diaspora to actively support causes such as Anganwadi centers and childcare homes through voluntary and philanthropic contributions.
This meeting signifies a robust step towards strengthening the bond between India and Guatemala, focusing on joint efforts in social development and gender equity.
