India to Launch Comprehensive Survey on Cooperative Sector
The cooperative sector serves as a vital pillar of India’s economy, significantly influencing agricultural production, rural development, and employment generation. Acknowledging the data gaps in this sector’s contributions, the Ministry of Cooperation (MoC) has initiated steps for a rapid survey on cooperatives to estimate their Gross Value Added (GVA) and employment levels across various cooperative sectors nationwide.
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has agreed in principle to undertake this survey, which will utilize a list of Functional Cooperatives (FCs) provided by the MoC. The framework for the sampling will be based on the National Cooperative Database (NCD), ensuring an extensive and representative survey.
The survey aims to cover both primary cooperatives and their federated bodies across 30 different sectors. These sectors include Credit Cooperatives, Housing Cooperatives, Producer Cooperatives, Marketing Cooperatives, Social Sector Cooperatives, and Multipurpose Cooperatives. This comprehensive approach is designed to yield comparative data for two fiscal years: FY 2020-21 and FY 2023-24.
Set to launch in April 2026, the survey will span six months, allowing adequate time for detailed data collection and analysis. In preparation for this significant undertaking, the Draft RSFC Schedule for the upcoming ASUSE 2026 has been made available on the MoSPI website for public consultation.
Researchers, policymakers, industry representatives, academic institutions, and the general public are encouraged to review the draft schedule and provide feedback on its structure, content, and coverage. This collaborative effort aims to enhance the quality, relevance, and coverage of the forthcoming survey results, which are expected to play a critical role in shaping policy and strategic decisions.
