39th Surajkund Crafts Mela Celebrates India’s Artistic Heritage
The Vice-President of India, Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan, officially inaugurated the 39th Surajkund International Atmanirbhar Crafts Mela in Faridabad, Haryana, today. This renowned crafts fair showcases the rich artistic traditions of India while celebrating the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat, bringing together artisans and cultural practitioners from around the globe.
A Celebration of Culture and Craft
The Surajkund Mela, running from January 31 to February 15, 2026, is a vibrant platform that reflects India’s cultural soul and artistic excellence. With participation from over 30 countries, this year’s Mela beautifully embodies the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, signifying that the world is one family.
Traditional Knowledge and Empowerment
During his address, Vice-President Radhakrishnan emphasized the importance of artisans as custodians of India’s long-standing heritage. He stated that empowering these craftsmen is vital for fostering an inclusive and sustainable economy. The Vice-President highlighted initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Kaushal Samman Yojana, which are instrumental in enhancing the handicraft sector through skill development and economic support.
Honoring Diversity in Craftsmanship
Referring to this year’s featured states, Uttar Pradesh and Meghalaya, the Vice-President noted that both showcase the unity in India’s diversity. Uttar Pradesh is known for its sophisticated craftsmanship in textiles, metalwork, and embroidery. Meanwhile, Meghalaya’s indigenous crafts exemplify sustainability and community-based traditions, aligning perfectly with the theme of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.
A Nod to Cultural Diplomacy
The Mela also welcomed Egypt as the partner country. Shri Radhakrishnan expressed admiration for Egypt’s ancient civilization and cultural richness, which resonate with India’s historical narrative. He visited the Egyptian Pavilion, appreciating the connection fostered through cultural diplomacy.
Enhancing Visitor Experience
As part of the opening ceremony, the Vice-President enjoyed vibrant cultural performances themed around Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat. He also launched the Mela Saathi Mobile App to improve the visitor experience and provide easy access to event-related information.

Shri Radhakrishnan commended the collaborative efforts of the Surajkund Mela Authority, the Ministry of Tourism, and various state departments for their role in organizing the event. He encouraged attendees to directly support artisans, helping to carry forward India’s enduring cultural heritage.
Among the dignitaries present were Haryana Chief Minister Shri Nayab Singh Saini, Union Minister of State for Cooperation Shri Krishan Pal Gurjar, and various members of the Haryana Legislative Assembly.
