BCB Unveils Shakib Al Hasan’s Strategy for Upcoming ICC Tournament Following T20 World Cup Exit

Bangladesh’s cricketing landscape is buzzing with the potential return of veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is actively pursuing his comeback, aiming for him to rejoin the national team in time for the home series against Pakistan in March. Batting coach Mohammad Ashraful has emphasized that if Shakib returns, he should aim for more than just a farewell appearance, suggesting that he could play a pivotal role in the 2027 ODI World Cup.

BCB’s Commitment to Shakib’s Return

The BCB has made it clear that they are keen on reintegrating Shakib into the national squad. This decision comes in the wake of Bangladesh’s disappointing performance in the recent World Cup. BCB director Asif Akbar stated that the board’s interest in Shakib is not merely a public relations move but part of a genuine plan to bolster the team. Regular communication has been established between the board and Shakib, with hopes pinned on his participation in the three-match ODI series against Pakistan scheduled for March 12, 14, and 16. The Test matches will follow in May, after the Pakistan Cricket Board suggested splitting the series due to the Pakistan Super League.

Asif Akbar noted that Shakib is eager to return to the field, but his personal security and ongoing harassment cases remain significant concerns. The BCB has taken steps to address these issues, with the board president tasked with engaging the government to resolve Shakib’s legal hurdles. Akbar mentioned that the majority of board members are in favor of Shakib’s return, highlighting the collective desire to see him back in action.

Shakib’s Future and Retirement Plans

Shakib Al Hasan’s future in cricket has been a topic of discussion, especially regarding his retirement plans. In September 2024, he announced intentions to retire from T20 internationals and hoped to conclude his Test career after the home series against South Africa, contingent on receiving security clearance. However, that clearance has not materialized, and Shakib has faced challenges returning to Bangladesh due to political changes and legal issues. He has expressed a desire to play in front of home fans before officially retiring, aligning with the BCB’s current strategy.

Ashraful believes that Shakib should reconsider his retirement timeline and focus on a more selective approach to his career. He pointed out that players can continue to perform well in one format, citing Mushfiqur Rahim’s current focus on Test cricket. Ashraful sees the 2027 ODI World Cup as a realistic target for Shakib, suggesting that he could continue playing ODIs until then, given modern cricket’s management of player workloads.

Shakib’s Performance and Current Status

Despite the challenges he has faced, Shakib Al Hasan remains active in various franchise leagues, which has kept him fit and competitive. His participation in these leagues strengthens the argument for a limited-format role with the national team. Ashraful noted that Shakib’s fitness and ongoing involvement in franchise tournaments position him well for a return to international cricket, particularly in ODIs leading up to the World Cup.

Shakib himself has been cautious about discussing his future plans. When approached for comments following the BCB’s announcement, he opted for a non-committal response, indicating the complexities surrounding his situation. The backdrop of his exclusion from the national team due to political statements and previous suspensions for bowling action adds layers to his potential return.

As the cricketing community awaits further developments, Shakib’s journey back to the national team remains uncertain. Whether he will make his comeback in March or aim for a longer-term role leading up to the 2027 World Cup is still to be determined, but the dialogue surrounding his return is gaining momentum.
