India Advances Green Hydrogen Initiatives Amid Growing Demand
India is making significant strides in its green hydrogen initiatives, shifting from ambitious goals to tangible actions. Abhay Bakre, Mission Director of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, highlighted this progress during the Leadership Spotlight Session at the India Energy Week 2026. The nation’s objective of producing 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030 has gained momentum through competitive pricing and the establishment of a strong demand environment.
During the session, Bakre emphasized that the years 2025, 2026, and 2027 are critical for launching the green hydrogen ecosystem. He noted that the prices for green hydrogen and ammonia are nearing those of conventional fuels, a key advancement that could pave the way for larger-scale domestic use and export opportunities.
Technological and Supply Chain Developments
From the perspective of technology and industry, Gary Godwin, Vice President at KBR, discussed the commercial viability of green ammonia technologies, which are now capable of functioning on a global scale. He emphasized the importance of developing resilient supply chains and establishing long-term offtake agreements to promote the adoption of green ammonia across various sectors, including power, shipping, and heavy industry.
Market Dynamics and Renewable Energy Integration
Dr. R K Malhotra, President of the Hydrogen Association of India, elaborated on how India’s competitive renewable energy prices and emerging electrolyzer manufacturing capabilities are creating a strong basis for scaling up green hydrogen and ammonia production. This development is crucial as it aligns with global demand for sustainable energy solutions.
Han Feenstra, Senior Policy Advisor from the Netherlands, provided insights into the evolving hydrogen markets in Europe. He noted that these markets are increasingly moving towards demand mandates and import frameworks, creating long-term opportunities for strong partners like India. With its competitive pricing and clear policies, India is becoming a significant contributor to Europe’s decarbonization efforts.
