BharatFS Revolutionizes Weather Forecasting for Farmers and Communities

The newly launched Bharat Forecast System (BharatFS) marks a significant advancement in weather forecasting capabilities in India. Utilizing the cutting-edge Triangular Cubic Octahedral (TCo) dynamical grid, BharatFS operates at a horizontal resolution of approximately 6 km. This enhancement allows the model to generate distinct weather forecasts tailored to district and block levels, providing better guidance during extreme weather events.

BharatFS is designed to assist various sectors with its ten-day forecast covering vital information such as rainfall, temperature, and the formation of low-pressure systems. By delivering forecasts at a refined 6.5 km resolution, the system aims to improve early warning mechanisms for farmers, fishermen, and communities that are often affected by disasters.

Enhanced Support for Local Authorities

While BharatFS outputs are not disseminated directly to the public, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) employs this advanced model to generate operational forecasts. These forecasts include warnings about cyclones, heavy rainfall, and other critical events. The actionable insights derived from BharatFS serve as vital resources for emergency services, helping them prepare and respond effectively to severe weather scenarios.

Public Access and Integration

The outputs of BharatFS are available on the IMD’s official website, allowing stakeholders to access vital weather data. The system’s capabilities extend beyond simple forecasting; it can also support urban planning initiatives. By providing initial and boundary conditions for regional flood forecasting models, BharatFS helps in generating specific flood-related variables, such as streamflow and water levels. This information is crucial for developing drainage and flood control infrastructure in urban areas.

Government’s Commitment to Disaster Management

This information was revealed by Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Earth Sciences and Science and Technology, during a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. The introduction of BharatFS exemplifies the government’s commitment to enhancing the resilience of vulnerable communities against weather-related challenges.

Overall, BharatFS is set to transform how weather forecasts are generated and utilized across India, significantly benefiting the agricultural sector and improving disaster management strategies.
