India Launches Initiatives for Carbon Capture and Sustainable Manufacturing

In a significant step towards combating climate change, the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) of India has unveiled a series of projects focused on biomanufacturing solutions aimed at reducing industrial COâ‚‚ emissions. The formal announcement was made during a national kick-off event that took place on January 23, 2026, at the National Institute of Immunology in New Delhi, marking the launch of new carbon capture utilization (CCU) initiatives under the BioE3 Policy.

Dr. V.K. Saraswat, a member of NITI Aayog, served as the chief guest at the event and introduced the booklet titled “Biomanufacturing for Carbon Capture and Its Utilization.” He emphasized that the biomanufacturing approach provides a practical and scalable solution for reducing harmful emissions while creating valuable products. Dr. Saraswat urged a collaborative effort among academia, industry, and policymakers to transition CCU innovations from limited pilots to broad implementation, aiming to support India’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.

Strengthening the Circular Bioeconomy

Dr. Rajesh S. Gokhale, Secretary of the DBT, highlighted the vision for CCU-enabled biomanufacturing to promote a green and circular bioeconomy. He explained that combining carbon capture with biomanufacturing can lead to a decarbonized industry by treating COâ‚‚ as a resource rather than a waste product. The introduction of supportive frameworks, such as a Carbon Credit Trading Scheme, is expected to enhance the adoption of these technologies across various sectors.

Collaboration Among Sectors

During the event, industry leaders, startups, and academic institutions gathered to discuss ways to align biomanufacturing technologies with industrial needs. Participants from key sectors, including steel, textiles, and clean technology, underscored the growing interest in CCU as an essential strategy for emissions reduction and the generation of new value chains in sustainable manufacturing.

Workshops and Future Perspectives

The day’s agenda featured strategic workshops and breakout discussions, focusing on priority themes such as product development and market strategies, synthetic biology, and policy frameworks. These sessions facilitated meaningful conversations about how best to pair academic research with industrial application, fostering partnerships to enhance CCU technology deployment.
