India-EU Free Trade Agreement: Piyush Goyal Discusses Donald Trump’s Role as a ‘Unifier’ in the Landmark Deal

Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has firmly refuted claims that former US President Donald Trump played a role in facilitating the recently concluded Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union. During a press conference in New Delhi, Goyal emphasized that discussions surrounding the FTA did not involve Trump, despite inquiries linking the agreement to recent US tariff actions. The FTA, described as the “mother of all deals,” marks a significant milestone in trade relations, especially amid ongoing global trade uncertainties.

Significance of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement

The India-EU FTA has been in negotiation for over two decades and is now poised to create a combined market of nearly 2 billion people. This agreement brings together India, the world’s fourth-largest economy, and the European Union, the second-largest economic bloc. Goyal highlighted that the deal is expected to be implemented by 2026, with a legal review process already underway. He described the pact as a “balanced, fair, and win-win” opportunity for businesses on both sides, addressing sensitive issues independently to ensure mutual benefit.

The timing of this agreement is particularly noteworthy, as it comes amid rising global trade tensions fueled by aggressive US tariff policies and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. The FTA aims to enhance trade relations between India and the EU, which together account for approximately 25% of global GDP and nearly one-third of global trade, valued at around USD 33 trillion.

Benefits for Trade and Investment

Under the terms of the FTA, 93% of Indian exports will gain duty-free access to the European Union, significantly boosting India’s trade prospects. Conversely, imports of luxury goods such as cars and wines from Europe will become more affordable for Indian consumers. Goyal emphasized that this agreement opens up a wide range of opportunities for investment and trade, positioning the EU as India’s 22nd FTA partner.

The potential economic benefits of the FTA are substantial. By reducing tariffs and enhancing market access, the agreement is expected to stimulate economic growth and create jobs in both regions. Goyal’s remarks suggest a strong commitment to ensuring that the FTA serves as a catalyst for deeper economic ties between India and the EU.

US Response and Global Trade Dynamics

The announcement of the India-EU FTA has drawn criticism from the United States, particularly from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. He remarked that the US has made greater sacrifices than Europe in the context of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, highlighting the imposition of 25% tariffs on India for purchasing Russian oil. Bessent expressed concern over the timing of the trade deal, suggesting that it undermines US efforts in the region.

Despite these criticisms, Goyal has maintained that the India-EU FTA stands on its own merits and is not influenced by external factors. The agreement is seen as a strategic move for both India and the EU, aiming to strengthen their economic positions in a rapidly changing global landscape. As the world grapples with trade uncertainties, the successful conclusion of this FTA may signal a shift in trade alliances and economic partnerships.
