WaSH Warriors Honored at National Water and Sanitation Event

The Ministry of Jal Shakti proudly hosted a remarkable ‘Samvad Samaroh’ in New Delhi today, celebrating the contributions of WaSH Warriors who have shown exemplary leadership in water conservation and sanitation efforts at the grassroots level. These dedicated individuals have worked hand in hand with local communities to tackle pressing water challenges using inclusive and equitable solutions, embodying the essence of community engagement championed by the Ministry’s initiatives.

Recognizing Grassroots Leadership

Today’s ceremony recognized 58 exceptional WaSH Warriors, nominated from various States and Union Territories, as part of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM). These participants, honored as Special Guests, were also invited to attend the Republic Day Parade at Kartavya Path on 26 January 2026.

The honored individuals hailed from Swachh Sujal Gaon villages, which have met the Har Ghar Jal certification under the JJM and the ODF Plus Model under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen). Their stories showcased significant community-driven advancements in drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene across rural India.

Voices from the Field

During the Samvad Samaroh, attendees had the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions with Hon’ble Union Minister for Jal Shakti, Shri C. R. Patil, alongside Ministers of State for Jal Shakti, Shri V. Somanna and Shri Raj Bhushan Choudhary. Senior officials from the Ministry were also present, including Shri V. L. Kantha Rao and Shri Rajeev Kumar Mital.

Each WaSH Warrior shared inspiring accounts of the challenges they faced and the transformations achieved through the Jal Jeevan Mission. Shri Motilal from Bijrakchhar village in Chhattisgarh recalled how limited access to drinking water affected the community. He noted that with the introduction of clean tap water in every household, residents are now healthier and women have more time for family and personal activities.

Shri Amrutbhai Parmar from Gujarat elaborated on the effective water supply systems established in his Timbachudi village, including model wells that ensure sustainability. He discussed the collaborative efforts with his community to improve water supply and the recognition these initiatives received at the district level.

Smt Lentsothsi from Nagaland shared her personal journey, highlighting how access to tap water has significantly freed up her mornings and improved her family’s overall health. Meanwhile, Ms. Nijuma Devi from Assam spoke about her commitment to promoting water conservation and hygiene practices among children and her community.

Minister’s Encouragement

In his address, Minister Patil commended the WaSH Warriors’ tireless efforts and urged them to continue innovating in water management and sanitation. The Minister emphasized that the principles of cleanliness must be integral to daily life and highlighted the transformative impact of the Jal Jeevan Mission, benefiting over 9.5 crore women by drastically reducing the time spent fetching water—an estimated savings of 4.5 crore hours.

Additionally, the Minister announced various outreach initiatives aimed at involving the youth, such as campaigns to raise awareness about water conservation in schools. He underlined the collective responsibility required for sustainable water use.

A booklet titled “Peyjal: Jan Shakti Ki Abhivyakti – Volume II” was also distributed during the event, capturing the essence of the WaSH Warriors’ leadership stories in ensuring safe and sustainable drinking water.

The event further culminated in a visit to the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya on 25th January 2026, as part of the special guest experience, reinforcing the vital role played by rural communities in national development.
