Washington Sundar’s Backup Under Scrutiny in Upcoming Warm-Up Match Against South Africa or India ‘A’

With the T20 World Cup set to kick off on February 7, the Indian cricket team is making last-minute preparations, including a potential warm-up match on February 4. This comes amid injury concerns for key players Washington Sundar and Tilak Varma. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is exploring options for the match, possibly against South Africa or an intra-squad game featuring India ‘A’ players, as they aim to finalize their squad before the tournament begins.

Injury Updates and Team Preparations

The Indian team is scheduled to gather in Mumbai on February 2, just days before the World Cup. The warm-up match is tentatively planned to take place at the Brabourne Stadium, pending confirmation. Washington Sundar’s recovery from a side strain has been slower than anticipated, raising concerns about his fitness for the initial matches of the World Cup. Meanwhile, Tilak Varma’s recovery is progressing well, and the team management is optimistic about his readiness for the second match on February 12. A BCCI source indicated that the selectors are keen to have the team settled by the time they face Pakistan in Colombo on February 15.

Riyan Parag, who is also recovering from a shoulder injury, has been instructed to prepare for the warm-up match if needed. The Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru is overseeing his rehabilitation, and he is expected to participate in two simulation matches on January 28 and January 30. His fitness will be assessed before he is cleared to join the team in Mumbai.

Squad Adjustments and Player Replacements

In light of the injuries, the selectors have made adjustments to the squad for the ongoing T20I series against New Zealand. Ravi Bishnoi has been named as Washington Sundar’s replacement, while Shreyas Iyer has stepped in for Tilak Varma for the first three T20Is. Bishnoi made his debut in the third T20I held in Guwahati, while Iyer remained on the bench throughout the series. The availability of Tilak Varma for the final two T20Is in Visakhapatnam and Thiruvananthapuram remains uncertain, as the selectors continue to monitor his recovery.

The BCCI has until January 30 to finalize changes to the squad, but the tournament’s technical committee retains the authority to allow replacements due to injuries even during the competition. This flexibility is crucial as the team navigates the challenges posed by player fitness ahead of the World Cup.

Concerns Over Washington Sundar’s Fitness

Washington Sundar’s injury has raised significant concerns within the team management. Reports suggest that he has sustained a muscle injury affecting the area from his ribs to his lower back. The selectors are wary of rushing his return, as doing so could jeopardize not only his World Cup participation but also his availability for the upcoming IPL season. Parag is seen as a suitable replacement if Sundar cannot recover in time, but the selectors are also considering other options should the warm-up match take place.

The situation remains fluid as the team prepares for the World Cup, with the focus on ensuring that all players are fit and ready to compete at the highest level. The upcoming warm-up match will be crucial in assessing the squad’s readiness and making any final adjustments before the tournament begins.
