CBFC Updates Mardaani 3: ‘Bachhi’ Becomes ‘Ladki’ and Slapping Scenes Modified

After the successful releases of Mardaani in 2014 and Mardaani 2 in 2019, Rani Mukerji is set to reprise her role as the determined inspector Shivani Shivaji Roy in Mardaani 3. Produced by Yash Raj Films, the film’s release date was moved up to January 30, just days away. As part of the preparation, the film has undergone a thorough censoring process, which included several significant modifications mandated by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). This article delves into the changes made to the action thriller ahead of its premiere.
CBFC’s Modifications and Censorship
The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) implemented a series of changes to *Mardaani 3* before granting it a U/A 16+ certificate on January 14. One of the primary alterations involved the insertion of drug disclaimers, which the filmmakers were required to include. Additionally, the term ‘bachhi’ was replaced with ‘ladki’ in a scene that depicted sexual violence. To ensure compliance, the filmmakers submitted proof of age for the actress involved to confirm she was not a minor.
Visuals depicting a girl being slapped were also modified, and derogatory language was altered in the English subtitles. The term ‘wh**e’ was changed to ‘trader,’ while a derogatory reference to a mother was muted. Furthermore, any references to sexual organs were replaced with more appropriate terminology. The CBFC also requested the removal of certain country names from a scene and required clarification regarding a dialogue spoken by kidnappers. Lastly, the filmmakers were instructed to include informational text addressing child and woman trafficking.
Voluntary Cuts and Final Runtime
Following the initial certification, the makers of *Mardaani 3* approached the CBFC again to request voluntary cuts to the film. This led to modifications in 14 different scenes, which were either shortened or deleted altogether. The duration of these cuts ranged from 9 to 59 seconds, resulting in a total reduction of 6 minutes and 30 seconds from the film’s runtime. The final runtime of *Mardaani 3* is now 130.37 minutes, or 2 hours, 10 minutes, and 37 seconds. The CBFC approved these voluntary cuts on January 23, ensuring that the film aligns with the board’s standards.
Anticipation for the Film’s Release
With its release just around the corner, excitement is building for *Mardaani 3*. Rani Mukerji‘s portrayal of Shivani Shivaji Roy has resonated with audiences in the previous installments, and the upcoming film aims to continue that legacy. The modifications made to the film reflect a commitment to addressing sensitive topics while ensuring that the content is suitable for a wider audience. As the release date approaches, fans are eager to see how the story unfolds and the impact it may have on discussions surrounding women’s safety and empowerment.
