New Centre Opens to Support Children with Developmental Delays

In a significant move towards supporting children with developmental delays, Dr. Virendra Kumar, Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, inaugurated the Cross Disability Early Intervention Centre (CDEIC) at the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (NIEPID) in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Dr. Kumar emphasized that parents play a crucial role as the primary therapists in a child’s life, asserting that no child should be left behind when equipped with the right knowledge and support.

Commitment to Inclusive Early Support

During the inauguration, Dr. Kumar highlighted the government’s unwavering dedication to fostering inclusive early intervention systems. He stated that early childhood intervention is not just a service but a national duty to ensure every child’s secure future. The minister pointed out that the first six years of life are pivotal for brain development and lifelong success in health, learning, and social participation.

Dr. Kumar mandated that the Noida CDEIC evolve into a model of excellence, emphasizing that quality should extend beyond infrastructure to include advanced technology and skilled professionals trained in evidence-based practices. He reiterated the importance of involving families, particularly parents and caregivers, in the development journey, instructing the centre to provide structured caregiver training programs with certification to empower families as equal partners.

Expanding Support Infrastructure

Smt. Manmeet Kaur Nanda, Additional Secretary at the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, also spoke at the event, sharing insights into the establishment of such centres across the country. She noted that the newly opened CDEIC in Noida is the 28th of its kind, underlining the ministry’s commitment to early identification and intervention for children. Nanda encouraged the NIEPID team to prioritize child-centric and family-oriented services for optimal care.

The Noida CDEIC is set to offer a wide range of holistic, multidisciplinary services tailored for children with developmental delays and special needs. Services will include Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy, Medical Consultation, Special Education, and Family Counselling, all designed to promote readiness for school and other crucial developmental milestones.

Visits and Cultural Presentations

During his visit, Dr. Kumar and other dignitaries toured the facilities of the CDEIC along with the Model Special Education Centre and Model Inclusive Primary School. They also inspected the Mobile Therapy Bus and PMDK facilities. The event featured a vibrant cultural presentation by children with special needs and included the distribution of the NIEPID DISHA curriculum materials and assistive devices to beneficiaries. The inauguration concluded with a tree plantation drive led by the Union Minister and Additional Secretary, symbolizing a collective commitment to fostering growth, sustainability, and the nurturing of every child’s potential through timely care and responsibility.
