Abhishek Bachchan Launches First Three European T20 Premier League Teams in Sydney

The European T20 Premier League (ETPL) has officially introduced the owners of its inaugural three franchises during a press conference in Sydney, Australia. This significant announcement took place against the iconic backdrop of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, marking a pivotal moment as the league prepares for its first season, set to kick off in late summer 2026. The confirmed franchise cities are Amsterdam, Edinburgh, and Belfast, each supported by notable figures from the sports and business sectors.

Franchise Ownership and Key Figures

The Amsterdam franchise will be led by a prominent group that includes former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh, who is a World Cup-winning player. He is joined by Jamie Dwyer, an Olympic gold medalist and five-time World Player of the Year, along with Tim Thomas, the former CEO of the Centre for Australia-India Relations and a past partner at KPMG Australia. This diverse ownership team aims to leverage their extensive experience to enhance the franchise’s impact in the league.

In Edinburgh, the franchise has been secured by former New Zealand cricketers Nathan McCullum and Kyle Mills. Both players bring a wealth of knowledge from their international careers and high-performance cricket systems, which they hope to apply to the development of the franchise. Meanwhile, the Belfast franchise will be owned by Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who is partnering with former NRMA Group CEO Rohan Lund and other strategic partners yet to be announced. Each franchise owner has expressed a commitment to fostering a strong cricket culture in their respective cities.

Vision and Goals of the League

Steve Waugh emphasized the long-term vision of the Amsterdam franchise, viewing the ETPL as a vital opportunity to promote cricket’s growth in Europe while upholding the sport’s core values. Glenn Maxwell echoed this sentiment, stating that his goal for the Belfast franchise is to cultivate a culture of enjoyment, fearlessness, and community engagement, contributing to the ongoing development of cricket in Ireland.

Kyle Mills highlighted the ETPL’s focus on governance and strong board partnerships, which he believes will make the league a significant player in global cricket. The emphasis on structured management and collaboration is seen as essential for the league’s success and sustainability.

Support and Partnerships

The ETPL is a joint venture between Rules Global (Rules X) and Cricket Ireland, a full member of the ICC. Co-founders Abhishek Bachchan, Saurav Banerjee, Priyanka Kaul, and Dhiraj Malhotra are committed to establishing a league that not only features established international players but also nurtures emerging talent from Europe. Bachchan noted that the league’s philosophy is rooted in integrity and vision, aiming to create meaningful franchises that resonate with fans and players alike.

Saurav Banerjee pointed out the under-commercialized nature of cricket in Europe, which accounts for nearly one-third of the ICC’s global membership. He believes that the ETPL is designed to unlock this potential through a structured, franchise-based model, paving the way for cricket’s growth across the continent.

Future Prospects for European Cricket

Officials from Cricket Ireland, Cricket Scotland, and the Royal Dutch Cricket Association (KNCB) have welcomed the establishment of the ETPL, viewing it as a crucial step toward accelerating cricket’s expansion in Europe. With the region gaining traction on the global stage, including Italy’s qualification for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 and several European nations set to host upcoming ICC events, the ETPL aims to support this momentum.

The league’s inaugural season is anticipated to commence in the final week of August 2026, positioning itself as a platform for the next phase of cricketing development in Europe. As the ETPL prepares for its launch, it promises to be a transformative force in the cricketing landscape, fostering new talent and engaging fans across the continent.
