AI Enhances India’s Geospatial Data Standardization
The Digital India BHASHINI Division, part of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), has taken a significant step towards strengthening the country’s geospatial data efforts. On January 20, 2026, they signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Survey of India (SoI) to digitize, transcribe, and standardize geographical place names using cutting-edge AI-based speech and language technologies. This partnership aims to create robust, multilingual, and accurate toponymic datasets, in accordance with the National Geospatial Policy of 2022.
The Survey of India serves as the national authority for the standardization and maintenance of geographical names, conducting extensive field surveys to collect place names in diverse local languages. Through this collaboration, BHASHINI will leverage its advanced speech-to-text capabilities to transform vast amounts of audio recordings of place names into structured and accessible digital formats. The resultant Toponymy Database will encompass over 1.6 million locations, ensuring comprehensive and validated geospatial data.
Advancing the National Geographical Name Information System
This initiative will significantly enhance the National Geographical Name Information System (NGNIS) by enabling the accurate conversion of field-collected audio data into various local scripts, including Devanagari and Roman formats. By incorporating automatic speech recognition and language normalization, the collaboration promises to increase the efficiency and reliability of toponym data processing across national maps and digital governance platforms.
Preservation of Linguistic Heritage
Moreover, this partnership emphasizes the importance of preserving correct pronunciations and regional dialects through audio documentation of place names. By adhering to the Survey of India’s Toponymy Manual and Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) practices, this initiative supports systematic standardization, thereby enhancing the quality and reliability of place-name datasets utilized in Open Series Maps and public service systems.
Empowering Geospatial Ecosystem
The BHASHINI Division will contribute its comprehensive AI portfolio for speech and language processing, which will facilitate large-scale transformation of human speech into high-quality geospatial datasets. This collaboration highlights the critical role of language technologies in enhancing India’s geospatial ecosystem, ensuring precise capturing, preservation, and standardization of place names in line with the Government of India’s vision for AI-enabled digital infrastructure that reflects diverse linguistic realities.
