Minister Unveils Vision for India’s Expanding Power Sector

In a forward-looking address at the inaugural session of the ‘Electricity Distribution Industry Conference (EDICON: 2026)’, Union Minister of Power, Shri Manohar Lal, emphasized the critical importance of a robust power sector for India’s growing economy. He articulated that a prosperous power sector is not just necessary but essential for the nation’s development, reflecting on the significant role of Distribution Companies (DISCOMs) in enhancing service delivery to consumers.

The two-day conference, scheduled for January 21-22, 2026, is organized by the Ministry of Power in collaboration with the All India Discoms Association (AIDA). During his address, the Minister called upon State Electricity Regulatory Commissions to adopt cost-reflective tariffs while ensuring that targeted subsidies are available for economically disadvantaged consumers as stipulated in the Electricity Act.

Highlighting ongoing efforts to improve transparency and reliability in the power distribution sector, the Minister launched the annual report titled ‘India Discoms: 2025’ by AISA. The report provides insights into the distribution sector’s current challenges, efficiency improvements, and the Ministry’s initiatives to address these issues. It features contributions from thirteen prominent figures in the power sector, reflecting a collective vision for the future.

Additionally, the Minister recognized excellence in the power distribution sector by conferring Gold and Silver awards to twelve DISCOMs across six categories. The awards celebrated achievements in revenue recovery in rural areas, effective use of smart meter data, improvements in consumer satisfaction with digital payments, innovation in renewable energy integration, agricultural feeder solarization, and successful change management to enhance consumer services. Recipients represented states including Gujarat, Odisha, Assam, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal.

The event was graced by several dignitaries, including Shri Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary of the Ministry of Power, and other esteemed leaders from the power sector. This conference aims to pave the way for an innovative and reliable power distribution landscape in India, supporting the country’s ambitious growth trajectory.
