IndiaSkills Competition Kicks Off in Northeast at Gauhati University
Today, the North-East region of India witnessed a significant event as Shri Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, officially inaugurated the IndiaSkills Regional Competition 2025–26 at Gauhati University in Assam. This prestigious event features young talents from eight northeastern states competing across 26 different skill categories, offering them an unparalleled opportunity to showcase their abilities on a national platform.
The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), in collaboration with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), has brought this renowned skilling championship to the North-East for the first time. This initiative aims to provide local youth with easier access to a national-level skills competition, fostering regional talent right in their own backyard.
The inauguration attracted a distinguished gathering, including Dr. Nani Gopal Mahanta, Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University, and Shri Gyanendra Dev Tripathi, Principal Secretary to the Government of Assam. Other notable attendees included Ms. Hena Usman, Joint Secretary at MSDE, along with various senior officials and stakeholders from the skilling ecosystem.
During the ceremony, Minister Chaudhary emphasized the Indian Prime Minister’s commitment to the North-East, which has notably created new opportunities for the region’s youth through policy initiatives and regular engagement. He remarked that events like IndiaSkills are instrumental in realizing this vision by bringing national platforms to the local level.
“IndiaSkills is not merely a competition; it is a celebration of excellence and the dignity of work. The North-East is brimming with talent, and this platform will help assert that our youth are ready to contribute significantly to India’s skilled workforce and economic progress,” said Chaudhary.
The Minister also pointed out the importance of aligning skill development with formal education, in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. He highlighted that harmonizing educational pathways with skill training enhances employability and entrepreneurship opportunities for the youth, preparing them for the dynamic challenges of the modern economy.
The competition has garnered participation from 162 competitors across all eight North-Eastern states, showcasing a rich diversity of talent. Participants will demonstrate skills in areas that range from Automobile Technology and Cloud Computing to health and social care, reflecting the evolving landscape of jobs and industries.
Notably, the event displays a significant increase in female participation in technical fields traditionally dominated by men, such as Electronics and Welding. This shift demonstrates the changing dynamics of the workforce, illustrating that women are increasingly stepping into various skill professions.
The IndiaSkills competition follows a rigorous selection process, beginning at the district level and advancing to state and regional competitions. Top performers will have the chance to compete in the National Competition, and thereafter, selected participants may represent India at the upcoming WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai slated for September 2026.
This event not only underscores the growing skilling ecosystem in the North-East but also aligns regional aspirations with national development goals, paving the way for a brighter future for the youth in this vibrant part of the country.
