India to Host Global Democracy Conference in 2026
The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to host the first-ever India International Conference on Democracy and Election Management (IICDEM) in January 2026. This significant three-day event, organized by the India International Institute of Democracy & Election Management (IIIDEM), will kick off on January 21 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.
Global Participation Expected
IICDEM 2026 is anticipated to be the largest global gathering focused on democracy and election management ever held in India. Nearly 100 international delegates from over 70 countries are expected to attend. The conference will also welcome representatives from various international organizations, foreign missions in India, and experts in the electoral field.
The inaugural session on January 21 will be led by Chief Election Commissioner Shri Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi, who will officially welcome the delegates and commence the conference activities.
Engaging Thematic Sessions
The agenda for the conference includes both general and plenary sessions involving Election Management Bodies (EMBs). Activities such as the EMB Leaders’ Plenary, working group meetings, and thematic sessions aimed at addressing global electoral challenges and best practices will form the core of the program. A total of 36 thematic groups, facilitated by the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of States and Union Territories and accompanied by noted national and international academic leaders, will engage in profound discussions throughout the event.
In addition to the sessions, the ECI plans to conduct over 40 bilateral meetings with EMBs to foster dialogue and cooperation on shared challenges. The ECI will also unveil ECINET, its new digital platform designed to consolidate all election-related information and services in one location.
Exhibition and Docuseries Showcase
Alongside the conference proceedings, an exhibition will demonstrate the vast complexity of managing elections in India, highlighting recent efforts by the ECI to fortify the foundational aspects of electoral rolls and election conduct. Attendees will also have the chance to view the docuseries “India Decides,” which delves into the planning behind the forthcoming Lok Sabha 2024 elections.
