India and UK Strengthen Ties at Commonwealth Conference

In a significant meeting held today at Parliament House in New Delhi, the Hon’ble Vice President of India, Shri C.P. Radhakrishnan, welcomed the Lord McFall of Alcluith PC, the Lord Speaker of the House of Lords from the United Kingdom. This cordial interaction took place during the 28th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC), which India is hosting from January 14 to 16, 2026.

The Vice President expressed his delight at the Lord Speaker’s participation, noting that it illustrates the enduring friendship and robust parliamentary ties between the two nations. He emphasized the opportunity this visit presented for the Lord Speaker to engage more deeply with India’s rich parliamentary traditions, culture, and democratic values.

Historical Ties and Democratic Values

During their discussion, the Vice President highlighted the intricate and extensive history shared by India and the United Kingdom, particularly how both nations’ parliamentary systems have evolved. He pointed out that while India has taken inspiration from the Westminster model, it has also developed its unique democratic framework.

The Vice President underscored the common democratic values that both Parliaments uphold, including the rule of law, parliamentary privilege, and effective oversight of the executive branch. He particularly stressed the significance of responsible Freedom of Speech in India, cautioning against its misuse for disruptive activities. This shared commitment to democratic principles, he noted, lays a firm foundation for mutual learning and collaboration.

Enhancing Parliamentary Diplomacy and Innovation

Further emphasizing the role of parliamentary diplomacy in fostering Commonwealth relations, the Vice President reaffirmed India’s dedication to exchange programs aimed at strengthening ties through parliamentary delegations. He mentioned the numerous inter-parliamentary delegations India has hosted and expressed interest in exploring joint workshops, training programs, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.

In an era marked by digital transformation, the Vice President noted that India has embraced e-parliament systems, live streaming, and digitized records to enhance parliamentary functioning. He expressed interest in learning from the House of Lords’ experiences with digital initiatives that aim to boost accessibility, transparency, and public engagement.

Collaborating on Global Challenges

The Vice President pointed out that the Commonwealth serves as a vital platform for Parliamentarians to exchange ideas and uphold democratic standards. He proposed that India and the UK could work collaboratively to champion key global issues within parliamentary and multilateral forums, including the promotion of women’s political participation and legislative actions for climate resilience.

Moreover, he suggested that efforts in education, particularly higher education, could serve as a tool of soft power while technology could be harnessed to foster governance that is inclusive, transparent, and citizen-centric.
