CSIR Launches Initiative to Empower Skills and Enhance Employment

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), India’s top scientific and research body, has launched an innovative program called the CSIR Integrated Skill Initiative. This landmark initiative is designed to align with the national objectives of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Skill India’, aiming to connect scientific research with the specific demands of industry and employable skills.

The initiative’s core mission is to merge skill development with science and technology, utilizing CSIR’s extensive research facilities, vast network, and deep scientific knowledge across the nation. It aims to benefit a wide range of participants, including students, researchers, technical staff, working professionals, school dropouts, ITI diploma holders, farmers, and communities in rural areas. A key focus of the program is to tailor skill training to meet genuine market, industry, and entrepreneurial needs.

Comprehensive Training Across Diverse Sectors

The CSIR Integrated Skill Initiative provides both short-term and long-term skill development courses that include training modules, internships, certification programs, and hands-on lab experiences. This comprehensive approach ensures participants gain not only theoretical knowledge but also practical skills relevant to modern industries.

The program covers 18 vital sectoral skills recognized by the National Skill Development Mission (NSDM). These sectors include aerospace, agriculture, automotive, healthcare, electronics, and information technology, among others. The initiative’s primary goal is to equip learners with the capabilities needed for career advancement and entrepreneurial success.

Training Impact and Future Prospects

Since its inception, the CSIR Integrated Skill Initiative has successfully trained over 190,000 individuals through more than 5,200 skill-based training sessions. This includes specific programs targeting rural citizens and women, particularly during its first two phases. The recently launched third phase, inaugurated in June 2025 by Dr. N. Kalaiselvi, CSIR’s Director General, emphasizes advanced skill development, bridging gaps between academia and industry, and fostering overall growth.

In its first year, the third phase has already provided training for over 14,000 individuals through 425+ training programs held across 37 CSIR laboratories nationwide. The CSIR-Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC) in Ghaziabad plays a crucial role in the initiative, overseeing training quality and effectiveness, which ensures the programs remain relevant and impactful.

The CSIR Integrated Skill Initiative is dedicated to building a knowledgeable, skilled, and self-reliant India, responding proactively to the evolving employment landscape.
