INSV Kaundinya Marks Historic Voyage to Oman
The Indian Naval Sailing Vessel INSV Kaundinya has successfully completed its maiden voyage from Porbandar, arriving in Muscat, the capital of Oman. This journey is significant as it highlights the rich maritime heritage shared by India and Oman, with connections that date back over 5,000 years. Upon arrival at Port Sultan Qaboos, the vessel and its crew were warmly welcomed by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal.
Minister Sonowal emphasized the importance of this occasion, stating, “This event is not only a celebration of a voyage but also of a deep-rooted civilizational bond. The arrival of this stitched ship in Muscat symbolizes the enduring friendship between India and Oman, enriched by mutual respect and historical ties.” He further noted that INSV Kaundinya stands as a testament to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to revive India’s ancient shipbuilding heritage.
Celebrating Heritage and Friendship
Name after the legendary mariner Kaundinya, INSV Kaundinya showcases India’s traditional maritime craftsmanship and sustainable shipbuilding practices. The vessel was built using ancient Indian techniques, inspired by a fifth-century vessel depicted in the renowned Ajanta Cave paintings. Construction methods included stitched-plank techniques that do not utilize modern nails or metal fastenings, reflecting India’s indigenous knowledge.
The welcome ceremony included prominent figures such as His Excellency Azzan Al Busaidi from Oman’s Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, along with dignitaries from both the Indian Navy and the Royal Navy of Oman. It was a colorful affair that featured traditional performances from both cultures, celebrated by a large gathering of the Indian community in Oman.
Strengthening Maritime Cooperation
During his visit, Minister Sonowal engaged in discussions with Omani Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, H.E. Eng. Said bin Hamood bin Said Al Mawali. They explored opportunities for expanding maritime cooperation, particularly in India’s rapidly growing port and maritime sector. Sonowal highlighted significant investment opportunities, especially projects like the Vadhavan Port in Maharashtra and the Tuticorin Outer Harbour in Tamil Nadu.
Moreover, Sonowal announced India’s $8.4 billion maritime development initiative aimed at enhancing the shipbuilding sector. This initiative includes plans for dedicated research and development, the establishment of a Maritime Development Fund, and the proposed establishment of a Green Shipping Corridor connecting India and Oman.
The signing of a memorandum of understanding between India and Oman on maritime heritage and museums is expected to further deepen the cooperation between the two nations, enriching their shared maritime history. As both countries continue to strengthen their maritime ties, the arrival of INSV Kaundinya not only marks a historical moment but also paves the way for future collaboration across various maritime fields.
