Public Sector Insurance Companies Strategize for Profitability
A crucial meeting focused on the financial and business performance of Public Sector Insurance Companies (PSICs) for the fiscal years 2024–25 and the initial half of 2025–26 took place on January 13, 2026. Chaired by Secretary of the Department of Financial Services, Shri M. Nagaraju, the session gathered key executives from major PSICs, including the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and others, to discuss strategies for enhancing profitability while maintaining their market presence.
During this meeting, Secretary Nagaraju emphasized the vital need for PSICs to increase profitable business ventures. He urged the companies to create strategies aimed at reducing loss ratios while concurrently boosting their retail portfolios. A significant emphasis was placed on the importance of developing new and innovative customized products that cater specifically to the needs of younger consumers and emerging risks.
Moving Towards Digitalization
In line with modern industry trends, Secretary Nagaraju pointed out that adopting new technologies is crucial for the advancement of PSICs. He proposed a move towards full digitalization, aiming for complete onboarding of retail products through digital channels. This push for digital transformation is seen as a key step in improving service efficiency and accessibility for consumers.
Enhancing Brand Visibility
The Secretary also spoke about the importance of enhancing communication efforts to boost brand visibility. Utilizing various platforms, particularly social media, was highlighted as a means to reach a wider audience and engage effectively with prospective clients.
Recognizing Achievements
In recognition of their contributions, Secretary Nagaraju praised LIC for its journey towards profitability and its expansion of the Bima Sakhi initiative across rural and semi-urban areas. The Agriculture Insurance Company of India Ltd (AICIL) was also acknowledged for surpassing the significant milestone of Rs 10,000 crore in premium this year, reflecting its positive growth trajectory.
Commitment to Customer Service
Another key topic during the discussions was the swift resolution of public grievances and the timely processing of claims. Secretary Nagaraju stressed that providing efficient customer service should be a high priority for all PSICs to ensure satisfaction and trust among policyholders.
The meeting featured prominent figures from the insurance sector, including R. Doraiswamy, CEO & MD of LIC, and CMDs from various other PSICs like NIACL, NICL, UIICL, OICL, and AICIL.
