New Mission Aims to Transform Rural Livelihoods with G-RAM-G
Aiming to bolster rural employment and transform livelihoods, the government has unveiled the Viksit Bharat Energy for Employment and Livelihood Mission (Gramin), commonly known as G-RAM-G. Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized the mission’s foundation in evidence and real-world experiences, steering clear of political bias as it directly impacts village life and national growth.
During a recent press conference, Dr. Singh explained that G-RAM-G is designed to be a digitally governed and outcome-focused initiative. By learning from previous public employment programs, the mission seeks to enhance transparency and accountability while ensuring employment opportunities are meaningful and beneficial to rural communities. The incorporation of modern technologies, including GPS-based monitoring and artificial intelligence, allows for real-time oversight of project execution and fund allocation.
Converging Efforts for Effective Implementation
One of the notable aspects of G-RAM-G is its convergent approach, which integrates previously isolated public works to avoid duplication and misuse of resources. By streamlining planning, execution, and outcomes, the mission addresses long-term priorities such as water security and rural infrastructure, ultimately ensuring that public funds contribute to lasting community assets.
Dr. Singh highlighted enhancements to the program, notably increasing guaranteed wage employment days from 100 to 125. This adjustment underscores the government’s commitment to improving livelihood security in rural areas. To tackle the issue of fraudulent beneficiaries and fake job cards, the entire system will be digitized, ensuring that relief reaches genuine workers and reducing financial leakage.
Promoting Fiscal Responsibility
On the financial front, G-RAM-G adopts a normative, state-wise allocation model based on objective criteria, departing from the previous open-ended system. Funding will follow a 60:40 split between the Centre and states, with special considerations for the North-Eastern and Himalayan regions. This structure promotes fiscal discipline and encourages state ownership in program execution.
To better align employment with agricultural cycles, the mission incorporates seasonal flexibility, allowing work to pause for up to 60 days during emergencies such as natural disasters. Wage payments will now occur weekly, a change aimed at enhancing income stability for rural workers.

Dr. Singh reiterated the mission’s philosophy, stating that it aligns with Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of rural empowerment. G-RAM-G is dedicated to fostering genuine development and accountability rather than offering mere symbolic gestures. The Minister concluded by affirming the government’s commitment to transparently communicating the mission’s facts and continuously evolving based on feedback, keeping the interests of villages, workers, and the nation paramount.
