Union Minister Reviews Future Plans of Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research
In a significant meeting held in New Delhi, Union Minister for Education, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, chaired the 3rd Meeting of the Standing Committee of Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) today. The meeting focused on reviewing the academic and research progress of all seven IISERs and discussing their future initiatives aimed at fostering a student-centered educational environment.
During the meeting, Minister Pradhan emphasized the importance of adopting more engaging approaches for students. He called for a shift towards outcome-oriented research to improve the quality of life and advance society. He also expressed confidence in the potential of each IISER to cultivate an academic culture of excellence that would inspire future generations of scientists and innovators, thereby strengthening India’s position in the global knowledge economy.
Strategies for Academic Flexibility
One of the key discussions revolved around implementing a Flexible Learning Entry and eXit framework (iFLEX). This initiative aims to create a learner-centric higher education system while maintaining academic rigor. Students would have the opportunity to pursue a semester-long experiential internship in research, innovation, industry, or entrepreneurship, earning academic credits upon completion.
Reforming PhD Programs
In response to existing challenges, IISER directors reported plans for a thorough review of their PhD programs. The objective is to identify gaps and align the courses with current industry needs and national priorities. This overhaul aims to improve training and better prepare students for the evolving job landscape.
Enhancing Research and Innovation
Commitment to innovation was reiterated, with plans to establish Research Parks and Incubators across all IISERs. These facilities will serve as collaborative spaces for academia, startups, and industry to foster innovation and research that addresses societal needs. Each IISER will focus on a unique domain, contributing to initiatives like Viksit Bharat and Make In India.
Establishing Section 8 Companies
To enhance research collaboration, IISERs will each form their Section 8 companies. These organizations aim to connect academic research with industry partners and attract funding. Each company will have a strong governance structure, including a Board of noted academicians and industry leaders.
Attracting Talented Students
In an effort to enhance the quality of its student body, a proposal was made to reserve admission spots for students excelling in International Olympiads. Additionally, the possibility of introducing a sports quota for undergraduate admissions was discussed. Measures will also be implemented to assist students transitioning from Bharatiya Bhasha-medium backgrounds to the English medium used in IISERs.
The meeting concluded with the unveiling of the 5-year and 10-year Vision Statement for the IISERs, alongside the signing of several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to strengthen academic and research collaborations. These collaborations aim to propel IISERs towards achieving their goals of scientific excellence and societal impact.
