India to Introduce Responsible Nations Index to Measure Global Governance
A press conference held today at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi unveiled plans for the launch of the Responsible Nations Index (RNI). This innovative index, developed by the World Intellectual Foundation (WIF), in collaboration with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Indian Institute of Management Mumbai (IIM Mumbai), and the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre (DAIC), aims to redefine how countries are assessed in the realms of governance and social responsibility.
Launch Details and Significance
The RNI, slated for official release on January 19, 2026, will be inaugurated in the presence of Shri Ram Nath Kovind, the former President of India. The distinguished speakers at the event included Prof. Jagdish Mukhi, Chairperson of the WIF; Justice (Retd.) Arun Kumar Mishra, Chairperson of the Advisory Board of WIF; and other prominent figures from academia and the foundation. They detailed the objectives, framework, and importance of the index.
Measuring Responsibility Beyond GDP
According to the speakers, the Responsible Nations Index marks India’s first globally anchored initiative designed to evaluate countries based on the principles of responsible governance, societal well-being, environmental protection, and global accountability. It shifts the focus away from traditional metrics like power and GDP, and instead assesses countries on more nuanced criteria.
Framework of the Index
The RNI encompasses a total of 154 countries and leverages transparent, globally sourced data to ensure both credibility and comparability across nations. The index is built around three primary dimensions: internal responsibility, which emphasizes dignity, justice, and citizen welfare; environmental responsibility, focused on the stewardship of natural resources and climate action; and external responsibility, assessing a nation’s contribution to peace, cooperation, and global stability.
Promoting Global Responsibility
The overarching aim of the Responsible Nations Index is to foster a global conversation centered on ethics, responsibility, and sustainable leadership in international relations. By introducing this index, the creators hope to facilitate a more balanced and value-driven understanding of how nations perform on the global stage, particularly in relation to pressing issues like food security and environmental stewardship.
This initiative signals a significant evolution in global governance metrics, aiming to usher in a new era where ethical considerations take center stage alongside conventional economic indicators.
