Successful Flight Test for New Indian Anti-Tank Missile
In a significant advancement for India’s defense capabilities, the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully flight-tested the Third Generation Fire & Forget Man Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM) on January 11, 2026. Conducted at the KK Ranges in Ahilya Nagar, Maharashtra, this successful test marks an important milestone in the nation’s efforts to enhance its indigenous military technology.
The MPATGM, designed for effectiveness against moving targets, incorporates cutting-edge features such as an Imaging Infrared (IIR) Homing Seeker, an all-electric Control Actuation System, and a sophisticated Fire Control System. These advanced systems have been developed by various DRDO laboratories, including the Research Centre Imarat, Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory, and High Energy Materials Research Laboratory.
To simulate target tanks during the trial, the Thermal Target System was created by the Defence Laboratory in Jodhpur. The missile’s IIR seeker is specially designed for optimal use during both day and night operations, ensuring a broad combat application. The warhead technology employed in the missile is capable of neutralizing modern main battle tanks, enhancing the operational capabilities of the Indian Army.
For production and development, Bharat Dynamics Limited and Bharat Electronics Limited have joined forces as Development-Cum-Production Partners (DcPP) for this advanced weapon system. The missile can be launched using a Tripod or Military Vehicle Launcher, providing flexibility in deployment.
Expressing pride in the accomplishment, Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh praised the DRDO and its partners, emphasizing the successful test as a vital step towards achieving Aatmanirbhar Bharat—a self-reliant India. He acknowledged the strong collaboration between DRDO, industry partners, and the defense sector.
Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, congratulated the team for executing the trial with great success. He noted that the test results pave the way for the missile system’s induction into the Indian Army, gearing up the forces with advanced and self-developed technology.
