India-EU Free Trade Agreement: Piyush Goyal Concludes Brussels Visit with Focus on Accelerating Negotiations
India and the European Union have made significant strides in advancing their proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) during a recent two-day visit by Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal to Brussels. Concluding on January 9, Goyal’s meetings with EU Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maros Sefcovic focused on expediting the long-standing FTA negotiations. Both sides emphasized the importance of balancing trade ambitions with domestic priorities, ensuring protection for farmers and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), while also enhancing India’s role in global supply chains.
High-Level Discussions in Brussels
During his visit to Brussels, Piyush Goyal engaged in multiple high-level discussions with Maros Sefcovic. The talks aimed to push forward the negotiations of the India-EU FTA, which have been ongoing for several years. Goyal expressed optimism about the discussions, stating that both parties are committed to a rules-based trading framework that benefits all stakeholders. The focus was on resolving outstanding issues and accelerating the negotiation process. The minister highlighted the need for the agreement to protect local farmers and MSMEs while facilitating Indian industries’ integration into global supply chains.
The Ministry of Commerce reported that the discussions covered critical areas such as Market Access for Goods, Rules of Origin, and Services. Both sides acknowledged progress in these areas, reflecting a strong political will to address remaining challenges through constructive dialogue. The aim is to finalize a fair and ambitious agreement that aligns with shared values and economic priorities.
Building on Previous Engagements
Goyal’s recent discussions in Brussels built upon earlier meetings held on January 6 and 7, 2026, between Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal and European Commission Director-General for Trade Sabine Weyand. These preliminary talks were focused on assessing the progress made across various negotiating tracks and narrowing down divergences. The collaborative spirit of these discussions set a positive tone for Goyal’s ministerial engagement, emphasizing the importance of a balanced and ambitious trade agreement.
The ongoing negotiations reflect a mutual commitment from both India and the EU to enhance their economic partnership. The two sides reiterated their dedication to resolving outstanding issues and achieving a comprehensive agreement that benefits both economies.
Strengthening Ties with Liechtenstein
Before his Brussels meetings, Goyal visited Liechtenstein, marking the first-ever trip by an Indian Cabinet Minister to the country. During this visit, he led a business roundtable with senior executives from prominent local companies, discussing the implementation of the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA). Goyal emphasized that the TEPA extends beyond mere trade liberalization, providing a framework for investment, technology collaboration, and skill development.
He encouraged Liechtenstein businesses to explore opportunities in India, particularly in light of the $100 billion investment commitment made by EFTA countries. Goyal’s visit included a tour of the Hilti Group’s headquarters, where he met with CEO Jahangir Doongaji. Discussions centered on enhancing localization efforts and increasing value addition in India’s construction sector, which Hilti has been part of for over 25 years.
Future Collaborations and Economic Cooperation
In addition to his meetings with business leaders, Goyal also met with Liechtenstein Prime Minister Brigitte Haas to discuss deepening economic and investment cooperation under the India-EFTA TEPA. The discussions explored potential collaborations in skill development, vocational training, and industry-academia partnerships. This initiative aims to connect India’s young workforce with Liechtenstein’s advanced industrial expertise, fostering mutual growth and innovation.
Overall, Goyal’s engagements in Brussels and Liechtenstein underscore India’s commitment to strengthening its economic relationships with European partners. The ongoing negotiations for the India-EU FTA and the collaborative efforts with EFTA countries reflect a strategic approach to enhancing trade, investment, and technological cooperation in the region.
