Axar Patel Reflects on His Surprising Drop After T20 World Cup Final

Axar Patel has officially joined India’s T20I leadership group as the newly appointed vice-captain ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup. In an exclusive interview, Patel shared insights about his journey as a cricketer, reflecting on his growth and experiences that have shaped him into a key player. He emphasized the importance of confidence and a clear mindset in his development, particularly highlighting his role as captain of the Delhi Capitals. Patel also discussed the challenges he faced in previous World Cups and how they contributed to his current success.

Path to Leadership

Axar Patel’s journey to becoming vice-captain of the Indian T20I team has been marked by significant personal and professional growth. He credits his experiences from past tournaments, including the 2015 and 2021 World Cups, for shaping his approach to the game. Patel noted that his time as captain of the Delhi Capitals allowed him to enhance his game awareness and leadership skills. He stated, “This journey started from the previous edition of the T20 World Cup. I’ve been maturing day by day as a cricketer.” His newfound confidence and understanding of various game situations have been pivotal in his development, culminating in his selection for the leadership group.

Overcoming Challenges

Reflecting on his past setbacks, Patel acknowledged the difficulties he faced when he was part of the 2015 World Cup squad but did not play, as well as missing out on the 2021 T20 World Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup. He described those times as challenging but essential for his growth. “Whatever I am today is because of those days,” he remarked. Patel emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive mindset during tough times, which ultimately helped him perform under pressure in crucial matches, including the T20 World Cup final against South Africa, where he scored 47 runs off 31 balls. This performance, he believes, helped him shed the label of being a backup choice for all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.

Adapting to New Roles

As he prepares for the T20 World Cup, Patel has embraced greater responsibility as a batsman. Initially starting as a batter, he transitioned to a full-time spinner but has since worked diligently to improve his batting skills. He recalled advice from MS Dhoni during the 2021 World Cup, which encouraged him to focus on his capabilities rather than the pressure to perform. Patel expressed that being sent up the batting order signifies the team’s trust in his abilities. He clarified that he does not view himself as a floater in the lineup but rather as a specialist batter with a defined role.

Balancing Fun and Seriousness

Known for his cheerful demeanor, Patel understands the importance of maintaining a balance between fun and professionalism, especially as a senior player. He believes in fostering a positive environment while ensuring that the seriousness of the game is not compromised. “I believe in keeping a fun environment, but it shouldn’t happen that people around you take it for granted,” he stated. Outside of cricket, Patel enjoys spending time with friends and indulging in personal interests, such as watching Korean dramas and following gaming tournaments. He prefers not to dwell on past performances but occasionally reviews clips of his better efforts to prepare mentally for upcoming competitions.
