Indian Markets Struggle Amid Rising Trade Tensions and Earnings Reports

Indian equity markets closed last week with losses, negatively impacted by escalating trade tensions and geopolitical risks. This trend is primarily driven by renewed tariff threats from the U.S. aimed at countries continuing to purchase Russian oil. These tariff proposals represent a significant near-term concern for Indian markets, contributing to corrective phases of 5% to 8% in benchmark indices since late 2025. Export-oriented sectors, particularly IT, pharma, and select midcaps, have experienced significant pressure. Notably, foreign institutional investor outflows have remained restrained, indicating controlled risk management rather than panic selling.

Economic Outlook and Market Focus

Recent estimates suggest that potential U.S. tariffs could have a GDP impact of 0.5% to 0.7% for FY26, depending on implementation details and any countermeasures taken. Nevertheless, strong domestic consumption, resilient services exports, and diversification towards markets in the EU, ASEAN, and the Middle East are providing a cushioning effect. Looking forward, analysts foresee a cautious market outlook over the next three to six months, with hope for stabilization if diplomatic negotiations progress or if global trade tensions reduce.

In the coming week, market attention is set to pivot towards Q3 earnings reports from major Indian corporations, particularly within the IT sector. Heavyweights such as HCL Tech, TCS, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, and Wipro, which collectively represent approximately 13% of the Nifty index, will share critical results and management insights. Investors will keenly monitor commentary concerning client IT budgets, discretionary spending recovery, and hiring strategies, especially in light of tighter H-1B visa regulations. Additionally, advancements in AI technologies and infrastructure will be closely scrutinized as vital growth factors for the industry.

The upcoming earnings report from Reliance Industries Ltd is also anticipated with great interest, given its significant influence on the indices. Observers will focus on performance trends within its energy, retail, and telecom divisions, seeking insights regarding demand, margin forecasts, and capital expenditures.

Market Technical Analysis and Support Levels

From a technical perspective, the Nifty 50 has seen a decline of around 2.5% over the past five trading sessions, breaking below the 26,000 consolidation zone and forming bearish patterns amidst selling pressure. Despite these challenges, the index remains within a long-term rising channel above important weekly moving averages, suggesting the current fluctuations may be corrective rather than indicative of a trend reversal. A critical support zone lies between 25,600 and 25,700, which, if breached, could lead to further decline toward 25,300 to 25,000.

Meanwhile, the Bank Nifty has displayed relative resilience, maintaining its rising trendline support near the 59,000 to 59,500 range. As long as this support holds, a recovery towards 59,600 to 60,000 seems plausible, although a sustained fall may lead to consolidation towards lower support levels. In contrast, the Sensex has faced persistent selling pressure with five consecutive sessions of lower lows, placing immediate support at the 83,500 mark. A continuation of this weakness could see further declines towards 83,000 and 82,150. On any recovery backed by positive cues, significant resistance will be encountered near the 84,500 to 85,000 range. With ongoing tariff-related uncertainties and geopolitical pressures, cautious sentiment is expected to persist in the near term.
