India Advances Health Care with Focus on Genomics and Rare Diseases
In a significant move towards enhancing healthcare in India, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized the importance of early detection and affordability in battling genetic and rare diseases. Speaking at the DBT-BRIC Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD) in Hyderabad, the Minister highlighted India’s readiness to confront complex health challenges through advancements in genomics, biotechnology, and preventive healthcare.
During his visit, Dr. Singh laid the foundation stone for the National Skill Development Centre, SAMARTH, and inaugurated the iDeA-NA BRIC-CDFD Technology Incubator. He noted that the country has transitioned from primarily dealing with infectious diseases to a modern healthcare landscape focused on molecular diagnostics and personalized medicine. Institutions like CDFD, according to the Minister, play a vital role in connecting laboratory research with clinical applications.
Government’s Commitment to Biotechnology
Dr. Singh reiterated the unprecedented focus on biotechnology and health under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He mentioned the recently announced Bio-E3 Policy, a move aimed at invigorating interest among scientists, startups, and young innovators nationwide. According to him, India is witnessing remarkable advancements in genomics, including large-scale genome sequencing and initiatives addressing pediatric genetic diseases, paving the way for personalized treatment approaches.

The introduction of India’s first National Policy for Rare Diseases in 2021 signifies a transformative step in government policy, encouraging scientific input and comprehensive care. Dr. Singh stated that while detection of rare diseases is vital, the affordability of sustained treatment remains a pressing concern for affected families.
Integrated Healthcare Model
On the broader healthcare front, the Minister discussed the government’s integrated healthcare model, which includes traditional systems through the Ministry of Ayush and the global acknowledgment of yoga as a preventive health measure. Evidence-based integration of these practices with modern medicine has shown promising results in managing lifestyle diseases.
During his tour, Dr. Singh commended CDFD for its ongoing research initiatives and outreach programs, emphasizing the need for effective communication of scientific advancements to the public, particularly youths, to foster trust and curiosity in biotechnology.
