TRAI Conducts Drive Tests on Mobile Network Performance in Madhya Pradesh
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has completed a series of Independent Drive Tests (IDT) in multiple locations across Madhya Pradesh. Conducted in November 2025, these tests aimed to assess the performance of mobile networks in urban areas, highway regions, and railway routes, providing a clear picture of service quality for users.
The IDTs covered a total of 357.4 kilometers in urban tests across Durg and Bhilai cities, as well as 297.8 kilometers along the Raipur to Jagdalpur highway, and 280.7 kilometers on the railway route from Bhopal to Ratlam. The testing period spanned from November 17 to November 25, highlighting real-world performance for various mobile technologies, including 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G.
Key Findings from Drive Tests
TRAI utilized calibrated equipment and standardized measurement protocols to gauge key parameters of mobile network performance. Evaluated metrics included voice services and data services, focusing on aspects such as call setup success rates, drop call rates, and data throughput.
In the voice services category, call setup success rates (CSSR) conveyed how effectively calls connected. Out of the major telecom service providers, RJIL demonstrated an impressive CSSR of 100% in auto-selection mode, followed by Airtel at 95.44%, VIL at 96.31%, and BSNL at 85.31%.
On the other hand, drop call rates varied, with RJIL only having a 0.45% rate, compared to BSNL’s 3.56%. Notably, the drive tests identified areas with poor signal strength, impacting network reliability across multiple routes.
Signal Quality Observations
While testing in urban areas, poor signal strength was recorded for Airtel at 0.87%, BSNL at 2.36%, VIL at 0.87%, and RJIL at 3.18%. Highway tests highlighted a much larger concern, with BSNL experiencing 26.29% poor signal coverage, while Airtel recorded 20.86%. For railway routes, BSNL once again faced the most significant challenges, with a poor signal level of 33.98%.
Real-World Implications
