CAQM Inspects NDMC Area to Combat Air Pollution
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has launched a comprehensive inspection initiative within the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) area, aimed at maintaining air quality standards through diligent enforcement of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). This action is part of the Commission’s ongoing efforts to monitor and address sources of air pollution effectively.
On January 5, 2026, a coordinated team of 11 CAQM flying squads scoured major NDMC zones, specifically targeting Circles 6, 11, and 14. High-traffic areas such as Chanakyapuri, Sarojini Nagar, Connaught Place, and India Gate were among the key locations assessed. The initiative was designed to identify local sources contributing to air pollution, notably the dumping and incineration of municipal solid waste (MSW) and biomass.
Throughout this inspection drive, a total of 54 inspections were carried out. Alarmingly, the teams found evidence of biomass and MSW burning at 18 locations and identified 35 instances of waste dumping. Extensive photographic documentation, complete with geo-tagging and timestamps, was produced to validate these findings and compiled into a detailed inspection report.
Most instances of biomass burning were seen near tea stalls and informal settlements, often used for heating. In contrast, MSW dumping was predominantly located along roadways, near collection points, and in isolated public areas, posing a significant risk of open burning if not addressed swiftly.
While several inspected areas maintained cleanliness and adherence to regulations, the reported incidents underline the critical need for consistent vigilance, particularly during evening and night hours. The findings demonstrate that even typically well-maintained areas are susceptible to localized pollution issues due to sporadic waste disposal practices.
The CAQM has emphasized the urgency of enhancing waste collection and management efforts. Recommendations include implementing effective evening operations for waste collection, timely removal of dumped refuse, and strict compliance with existing Solid Waste Management Rules to prevent future violations.
Looking ahead, the Commission reaffirmed its commitment to the ‘Operation Clean Air’ initiative, promising regular inspections and enforcement actions throughout Delhi-NCR. Collaborating closely with the NDMC and relevant authorities, the CAQM aims to tackle littering and burning issues, fostering cleaner and well-maintained urban environments in the region.
