India Launches First Tropical Recirculating Aquaculture Facility
In a landmark development for the aquaculture sector, Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Lalan Singh), the Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, Dairying, and Panchayati Raj, inaugurated the Smart Green Aquaculture Farm and Research Institute, along with a cutting-edge Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS) Facility, in Kandukur Mandal, Ranga Reddy District, Telangana. This event saw the presence of notable dignitaries including Shri George Kurian, Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying and Minority Affairs, and Prof. S. P. Singh Baghel, Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying and Panchayati Raj.
Revolutionizing Indian Aquaculture
The inauguration of this facility represents a watershed moment in Indian aquaculture. It is the country’s first commercial-scale tropical RAS-based Rainbow Trout Aquaculture Farm and Research Institute. The facility showcases how premium cold-water species, such as Rainbow Trout, can be cultivated year-round in tropical climates. Through precision engineering and advanced water recirculation technologies, it has been established that climate is not a barrier to successful aquaculture. Instead, technology serves as the primary driver of aquaculture viability.
Empowering Youth and Strengthening Human Capital
This innovative project also serves as a live training and demonstration platform. It provides young people with practical experience in advanced aquaculture systems, automation, and biosecurity. By doing so, it plays a vital role in enhancing human capital within the fisheries sector, preparing the future workforce to meet evolving industry demands.
National Fisheries Development Board Meeting
Earlier in the day, Minister Singh chaired the 12th Annual General Meeting of the Governing Body of the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) at Novotel Hotel in Hyderabad. During this meeting, Shri Shyam Singh Rana, the Hon’ble Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, and Animal Husbandry & Dairying Department of the Government of Haryana, transferred a document for a 5-acre land parcel to the NFDB. This land in Sultanpur, District Gurugram, Haryana, is intended for establishing the Northern Regional Centre of NFDB, aimed at bolstering aquaculture development across the northern states of India.
This initiative marks a significant advance in India’s aquaculture capabilities and highlights the government’s commitment to developing sustainable fishing practices and resources across the nation.
