Universal Music Group Acquires 30% Stake in Excel Entertainment for Rs 2,400 Crores
Universal Music Group (UMG) has made a significant move in the Indian entertainment sector by acquiring a 30% stake in Excel Entertainment, a leading Bollywood production house co-founded by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani. This strategic investment, valued at approximately Rs 2,400 crores (around USD $267 million), is set to enhance collaboration between the global music powerhouse and the Indian content studio. The partnership aims to expand opportunities across music, film, and digital content, marking a new chapter in the evolving landscape of Indian entertainment.
Details of the Acquisition
The definitive agreement, confirmed on January 5, positions Universal Music India (UMI) as a major minority shareholder in Excel Entertainment. This partnership is not limited to equity acquisition; it also includes a commitment to collaborate on various projects. UMG will gain global distribution rights for all future original soundtracks created for Excel’s projects. This strategic alignment is expected to foster a robust synergy between music and film, enhancing the reach of Indian content on international platforms.
As part of the agreement, a dedicated music label under Excel will be established, with Universal Music managing worldwide distribution. Furthermore, Universal Music Publishing Group will act as the exclusive music publishing partner for Excel’s content. This arrangement is anticipated to broaden the global footprint of Indian film music, allowing for greater exposure and opportunities for artists involved in these projects.
Leadership and Creative Control
The investment also secures a position for Devraj Sanyal, Chairman and CEO of Universal Music India & South Asia, on Excel Entertainment’s board. Despite this, co-founders Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani will maintain creative control over the studio’s projects and direction. Sanyal expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, emphasizing the exciting prospects within the Indian film industry and the potential for music-led entertainment.
In their joint statement, Akhtar and Sidhwani highlighted the growth of India’s entertainment landscape and the importance of global collaborations. They expressed excitement about the transformative potential of this alliance, which aims to unlock new opportunities for artists across various formats, including music and film. Their vision is to share culturally rich stories with a global audience, enhancing the international appeal of Indian narratives.
