TRAI Unveils Mobile Network Performance Report for Kolkata

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released its Independent Drive Test (IDT) findings, showcasing the mobile network performance across Kolkata and parts of the 24 Parganas districts. Conducted in November 2025, the tests evaluated the operational capabilities of various mobile operators in real-world scenarios, emphasizing voice and data service efficiency in a variety of urban environments.

Between November 10 and November 15, TRAI’s teams meticulously covered 308.1 kilometers within the Kolkata Telecom District (TD), including key hotspots and conducting walk tests over 2.6 kilometers. The assessment spanned a diverse range of locations–from bustling business districts and residential neighborhoods to institutional hotspots, enabling a comprehensive view of mobile network performance.

Key Findings from the Drive Tests

The report includes performance metrics for voice and data services, focusing on several key parameters. For voice services, the report highlighted the call setup success rate (CSSR), drop call rate (DCR), call setup time, call silence rate, speech quality, and overall coverage. As per the results, mobile networks like Airtel, BSNL, RJIL, and VIL reported impressive call setup success rates of 99.81%, 96.53%, 100.00%, and 99.63%, respectively.

When examining the drop call rates, Airtel recorded 0.19%, BSNL at 2.46%, RJIL had a zero drop call rate, and VIL registered a drop call rate of 0.37%. Impressively, the tests also evaluated the performance of data services, revealing that 5G offered maximum average download speeds of 273.82 Mbps and upload speeds of 43.96 Mbps during city drives.

Signal Strength and Coverage Areas

The findings showed varying signal strengths across different technologies. Airtel demonstrated a signal strength deficiency of 0.24% in auto-selection mode, while BSNL faced a 7.89% deficiency, followed by RJIL and VIL with 0.19% and 1.07%, respectively. The testing encompassed key areas such as Amtala, Bibirhat, Maheshtala, and several prestigious institutions like Adamas University and the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta.

TRAI’s rigorous testing used standardized protocols and approved equipment to ensure accurate results. The detailed performance assessment report is now accessible on the TRAI website.
