Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari Retires After 40 Years of Service

Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari has announced his retirement as Vice Chief of the Air Staff, concluding a remarkable 40-year career with the Indian Air Force (IAF) on 31 December 2025. Committed to serving the nation, Air Marshal Tiwari’s legacy includes extensive flying experience and a distinguished record in various command and staff appointments.

Commissioned on 07 June 1986, Air Marshal Tiwari began his journey as a Flying Pilot in the fighter stream of the IAF. Over the years, he accumulated more than 3600 flying hours across multiple aircraft types, showcasing his versatility and expertise. His illustrious career has seen him excel as both a Qualified Flying Instructor and an Experimental Test Pilot, further leading to his graduation from the prestigious Air Command and Staff College in the USA.

During his tenure, he served notably as the Directing Staff at the IAF Test Pilots’ School and the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington. His operational acumen was particularly evident during the Kargil Operations in 1999, where he played a key role in operationalizing the ‘Litening’ Laser Designation Pod. Additionally, he had a significant influence on the flight testing phases of the Light Combat Aircraft.

Between 2013 and 2016, Air Marshal Tiwari represented the Indian Air Force as the Air Attache in Paris, further broadening his international experiences. Throughout his career, he held numerous important positions, including Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Projects), Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Plans), Deputy Chief of the Air Staff at Air HQ (VB), and Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief at South Western Air Command.

In recognition of his exemplary service, Air Marshal Tiwari has received several prestigious awards, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (2025), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (2022), and the Vayu Sena Medal (2008). His commitment to service was particularly honored in 2025 when he was decorated with the Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal for his distinguished operations.
