SPREE 2025 Extended: More Time for Employer Registration

In a move that aims to enhance social security coverage in India, the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has announced a one-month extension for the Scheme for Promotion of Registration of Employers and Employees (SPREE 2025). Initially set to run from July 1, 2025, to December 31, 2025, the program will now be operational until January 31, 2026, allowing employers additional time to register their businesses and employees.
The decision follows requests from employers, employers’ associations, and various state governments, reflecting a collaborative approach to bolster compliance with the Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) Act. The announcement came during the 196th Meeting of the ESI Corporation, chaired by Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Minister for Labour, Employment, and Youth Affairs and Sports.
The SPREE scheme provides a unique opportunity for unregistered employers and employees to join the ESI framework without the burden of previous inspections or demands for outstanding dues. This initiative is crucial for encouraging businesses to participate in social security schemes, thereby aligning with the objectives of the recently implemented Code on Social Security.
With this extension, employers are encouraged to complete their digital registration through the ESIC, Shram Suvidha, and MCA portals. Importantly, registration will be effective from the date specified by the employer, easing the process for newly registered establishments. Such entities can take advantage of the ‘no demand for past contributions’ policy, alongside exemptions from inspections and the need for prior records, given they register within this new timeframe.
However, failure to register under the ESI Scheme by January 31, 2026, will result in the establishment being liable for past contributions. This includes potential legal actions, penalties, and payment of damages and interest associated with late registration.
The extension announced by ESIC showcases its commitment to promoting voluntary compliance and expanding social security coverage throughout the nation. The initiative is expected to significantly benefit the workforce by increasing the number of employers participating in the ESI framework and thereby enhancing overall social security for employees across various industries.
