India Unveils National Frequency Allocation Plan 2025
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has unveiled the National Frequency Allocation Plan 2025 (NFAP-2025), a significant policy framework that will guide the management and distribution of radio-frequency spectrum across India. Set to take effect on December 30, 2025, this plan is pivotal for the evolving telecommunications landscape in the country.
NFAP-2025 is designed to allocate radio-frequency spectrum across a vast range from 8.3 kHz to 3000 GHz, serving as a crucial reference point for spectrum managers, wireless operators, and telecom equipment manufacturers. The release of this plan comes as the demand for spectrum intensifies, particularly with the rapid advancement of telecommunications technologies.
Strategic Enhancements to Support Next-Gen Technologies
One of the standout features of NFAP-2025 is the identification of the 6425–7125 MHz band, which is allocated for International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT). This enhancement seeks to bolster mid-band spectrum availability significantly, catering to the burgeoning needs of 5G, 5G Advanced, and future 6G networks.
In addition to mobile communications, NFAP-2025 includes the allocation of Ka, Q, and V bands for satellite-based services. This is especially crucial given the increasing reliance on high-throughput Geo-Stationary Orbit (GSO) satellites and expansive non-GSO satellite constellations that facilitate global communications.
The plan also recognizes the importance of connectivity at sea and in the air, providing additional spectrum for In-Flight and Maritime Connectivity (IFMC). This initiative aims to ensure that passengers enjoy seamless broadband access, whether they are flying or cruising the seas.
Moreover, NFAP-2025 incorporates support for emerging technologies such as Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication, Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellite services, along with expanded broadband connectivity options. These additions are expected to make India’s spectrum management more responsive and aligned with global standards, ultimately fostering a robust ecosystem for technological growth in the country.
