Government Disburses ₹578.4 Crores in Grants to Rajasthan and Jharkhand
The Union Government has taken a significant step towards bolstering local governance in Rajasthan and Jharkhand by disbursing grants from the Fifteenth Finance Commission for the financial year 2025-26. A total of ₹578.4 crores has been allocated to enhance the functionality of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) and Rural Local Bodies (RLBs) in these states, showcasing the government’s commitment to rural development and infrastructure.
Investment in Rajasthan’s Local Bodies
In Rajasthan, the first instalment of Untied Grants for the fiscal year 2025-26 has been released, amounting to ₹303.0419 crores. This funding will benefit 24 District Panchayats, 339 Block Panchayats, and an impressive 3,857 Gram Panchayats throughout the state. Additionally, ₹145.24 crores, representing previously withheld portions of Untied Grants from the fiscal year 2024-25, will also be disbursed to eligible Rural Local Bodies in Rajasthan, further enhancing local governance and community projects.
Support for Jharkhand’s Governance
Similarly, Jharkhand is set to benefit from a first instalment of Untied Grants for FY 2024-25, which totals ₹275.1253 crores. This funding covers all eligible 24 District Panchayats, 253 Block Panchayats, and 4,342 Gram Panchayats across the state, reinforcing the government’s initiative to empower rural administrations.
Purpose and Utilization of Grants
The Ministry of Panchayati Raj and the Ministry of Jal Shakti (Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation) are responsible for recommending the release of these grants, which the Ministry of Finance then disburses. The grants are allocated in two instalments within each financial year, allowing Local Bodies the flexibility to address specific local needs. The Untied Grants may be utilized for various projects, excluding salaries and routine expenses, focusing instead on substantial community-oriented initiatives.
Moreover, the Tied Grants are designated specifically for essential services such as maintaining sanitation standards, including the management of household waste and fecal sludge, along with ensuring access to drinking water through rainwater harvesting and recycling programs.
This financial support aims not only to improve infrastructure and services in rural areas but also to foster sustainable development by enhancing local governance capacity. As these grants begin to flow into Rajasthan and Jharkhand, the hope is to see a palpable improvement in the living conditions and governance of these regions.
