Google to Enable Gmail Username Edits: Details on Upcoming Feature

Google is set to introduce a significant update for Gmail users, allowing them to change their existing usernames without the need to create a new account. This long-awaited feature aims to provide users with greater flexibility in managing their email identities while retaining access to all associated Google services. The change will specifically apply to accounts that use the standard @gmail.com domain, enabling users to select a new username while keeping their existing account intact.

Eligibility for Username Changes

Only users with Gmail addresses that end in @gmail.com will be able to take advantage of this new feature. Accounts associated with custom domains, as well as those linked to work or school, are not eligible for this change. Users must also ensure that their new email address continues to end with @gmail.com. This restriction is designed to maintain consistency within the Gmail platform and ensure that all changes are manageable within the existing framework of Google accounts.

How the Change Will Be Implemented

Google plans to roll out this feature in phases, allowing users to check its availability through their Google account settings. To see if the option is accessible, users can navigate to ‘Personal info’ and then select ‘Email.’ If the feature is available, users will be able to initiate the change. Once the new username is set, any emails sent to either the old or new Gmail address will be directed to the same inbox. Additionally, the old address will be retained as a recovery email, providing users with the flexibility to sign in using either address.

Rules and Limitations

To prevent misuse of the new feature, Google has established specific rules. After changing their Gmail username, users must wait a full 12 months before they can make another change. During this waiting period, they can revert to their original address if necessary. However, users are prohibited from creating a new Google account using their old Gmail username during this time, as it remains linked to the existing account. Furthermore, while most services will reflect the new username, some older services, such as past Calendar events, may still display the old address temporarily. Each Google account will be allowed to change its Gmail address up to three times, enabling a total of four usernames over the lifetime of the account.
